5 Tips for Staying On Top of Your Emails at Work

Emails at work can soon add up, especially if you're a B2B platform, such as in the world of marketing. Emails can become a nuisance and it can take up a lot of your time if you constantly receive emails from people, newsletters or even subscriptions you've signed up to. With this in mind, here are a few of my tried and tested tips for staying on top of your emails while at work, no matter the industry you work in.

1. Move small conversations to smaller platforms

Conversations that are small, or that you want a simple answer to, might not warrant an email in the first place. Think before you send an email to someone and ask whether it could be send via Teams, Slack or whether a simple phone call will suffice. You might find that other methods of communication are more efficient and effective, despite everyone relying on the ever-popular emailing method.

2. Unsubscribe from emailing lists & newsletters

If you're finding your emails difficult to keep track off, then do some housekeeping. Unsubscribe from mailing lists and newsletters if you want to reduce the amount of unimportant emails you're getting. This will also help to make room for more important correspondence, as well as enable you to keep track of things and ensure you aren't missing certain things.

3. Write clear & concise email subjects

When you're emailing someone, whether it be B2B or B2C, then it's likely that the recipient is both busy and wary of scam emails. To make sure that your email gets read, make sure you include clear and concise subject lines.

Not only will this help in terms of the recipient's organisation of emails, but it also helps to keep things simple for everyone. In addition, if it's important, the recipient will know this and your email will get read as soon as possible.

4. If in doubt, don't CC people

While you might think that you're doing the right thing and covering all bases by CC'ing people into your emails, it can add a whole new layer of confusion that might not have been necessary to start with. If in doubt, don't bother CC'ing anyone else into your emails, just to keep things as simple as possible.

5. Regularly check your emails; when you log on in the morning & when you get back from a lunch break

If you get loads of emails each day, then it can become all-consuming if you're always checking your emails throughout the course of a day. Instead, limit yourself to checking once in the morning, once when you come back from your lunch break and then again just before you log off for good measure. This allows you the time to actually get your job done in the meantime.
