10 Things I Always Keep in My Car

Since getting my new car, it got me thinking about what I should actually be carrying around with me, especially when it came to transferring the stuff over from my old car into my new car. So what have I decided to make sure I'm driving around with, not only for safety but for convenience as well? Let me take you through everything I keep in my car:

  • Phone charger - we can't get around these days without a mobile phone. Whether you break down or need to make sure people know where you are, a phone charger has got to be a must. Most modern cars these days will have a dedicated port you can use, so take advantage of it
  • Shopping bag - shopping bags are so convenient to keep in the boot of your car. Not only do you want to avoid paying for a bag, but you also want to keep your collection down, because they can get out of hand. I always keep a reusable shopping bag in the boot for good measure
  • Jump leads - this might sound a little old fashioned, especially if people rely so heavily on breakdown services etc, that's really the last thing that I want to be doing. If I can solve the problem myself, I will do so, which is why I keep some jump leads in with the spare wheel. You never know when your battery might fail, so it's an essential tool in my opinion
  • Ice scraper - while this isn't something you'll need for the majority of the year, it's always best to keep one in the car, somewhere, rather than keep taking it out and putting it back in again. I know I will forget to put it back in, so I never take it out - simple. Sod's law I won't have one just as I need it most, haha
  • Mini first aid kit - you never know when you might need to pull out a plaster or some gauze to patch up a wound or a burn. First aid kits can come in huge boxes, but there are some smaller ones available that will slot right into your glove box, no questions asked. Hopefully, you won't need to use it, but it gives me peace of mind knowing that I have one on hand if it's needed
  • Anti-bacterial wipes - just as you never know when you'll need a first aid kit, you never know when you need some wet wipes handy. The fact that they're anti-bacterial is a bonus - perfect if you like to enjoy a sandwich in the car here and there, or even something as simple as a bag of crisps
  • Sunglasses - while you might be thinking that you'd already be wearing some if it's sunny, it's not always sunny when you leave the house. A lot of the time, the sun comes out later in the day and I'm caught out. So I always make sure that I have a pair of sunglasses in the car. I don't leave my Ray Bans in there, though. I keep my gardening sunglasses in there instead, which were about Ā£1 from Primark - you can't go wrong
  • Tissues - tissues are always something that someone is going to need, whether it be yourself or your passengers. Whether I pop in a packet of pocket tissues or gather up some napkins from a cheeky drive-thru McDonalds, there will always be a tissue in my car, of some kind, for someone to use when they need it
  • Blanket - this might sound like an odd one, but it's essential for two reasons. One: it helps you to keep warm should you break down. Two: it can be used to stop shopping bags, etc, from rubbing on your back bumper or marking the plastic in your boot. Either way, a blanket is something that I will always keep in my car
  • Car manual - this is a vital thing to keep in the glove box, because you never know when you'll have to look up codes or or see how to change the lightbulbs in your head lights, for instance. Among many other things, a car manual is your Bible, so keep it with the vehicle at all times
  • Spare tyre - this is a tough one because not every car has a spare tyre these days. My old car didn't - it had a tyre repair kit instead. My new one, thankfully, does have a spare wheel, which is grand and gives me peace of mind that I do have a spare to rely on should a tyre fail. Instead of being located under the chassis of the car, it's housed in the boot
  • Something reflective - again, this is something you'll need should you break down. You want to make sure that other drivers can see you no matter what. I would recommend a reflective vest over armbands because it'll be larger and easier to spot for those whizzing past in their cars
  • A roadside torch - you never know when you're going to breakdown; any time of the day or night, so you need to make sure that you have something on you that is powerful enough to light up your surroundings. You could rely on the light on your phone, but it's simply not powerful enough. Buy a roadside torch from somewhere like Halfords and be safe on the roadside, along with your reflective gear
