The Correct Order to Apply Skincare Products

Skincare can be something confuses a lot of people. There's a lot of debate online about when to apply products, how, for how long and what order they should be applied in. From the research I have done, there's no right answer. But there is a common answer.

I have delved deeper into this than I thought, going down a rabbit hole of information, and so armed with that knowledge, this is the common thread that I found along the way. So here's the correct order, based on the research I've done, to apply your skincare products, and it's how I now do it too :)

  1. Cleanser - the first step in your skincare routine is to make sure your face has been cleansed. This provides a solid foundation for the rest of your products, as well as helping to reduce bacteria on the skin, leading to less breakouts and irritation
  2. Toner - this restores the skin to its natural pH level. A toner will also help to remove any dead skin cells that the cleanser failed to pick up. This is also a great product to use if you're wanting to remove residual makeup they may have been left behind after cleansing
  3. A treatment or a face mask - this is the perfect time to use a face mask or some sort of face peel, if you'd like. Essentially, any product with a concentrated active ingredient should be used at this stage, after toner and before the serum
  4. Serum - any serum or concentrate should be applied to the skin at this stage in the game. It further enhances the active ingredient from the face mask or face peel that you used previously. Apply this after face masks or peels and before eye creams
  5. Eye cream - eye creams can be applied at this point, concentrating purely on the under eye to battle issues with bags and darkening of the skin. Make sure you check how to apply the eye cream you have as some will require different actions than others
  6. Moisturiser - this is when the skin will need some moisture and hydration, because you've only used concentrated ingredients so far. Use any moisturiser that works for you. I like to use a moisturiser for the daytime and another one for the nighttime - I don't just have one moisturiser that I use all the time
  7. Suncream (where applicable) - while this might not be a product that you apply every single day, it's essential that you're applying some sort of suncream to the face, regardless of the season you're in. However, you should be religious with this during the summertime, if not at any other time of year
