When to Throw Away Your Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes - they become dirty and riddled with bacteria, almost from the first time you use them. They can be incredibly difficult to maintain, but even if you clean them regularly, there will come a time where you will need to chuck those makeup brushes away and get some new ones. But how can you tell when to throw away your makeup brushes? Let me shed some light on this topic for you:

They're looking frazzled

Just like with other types of brushes, from toothbrush heads to hairbrushes, if the bristles are looking frayed and bent, then it's time to get rid. Be on the lookout for a replacement as soon as possible, whether you upgrade or repurchase.

The bristles are starting to fall out

Nothing screams "new makeup brush" like bristles coming out and sticking to your face as you're using it. If you're experiencing loose bristles or fall out of any kind, then it's time to start shopping for a new makeup brush. The bristles could be falling out for a number of reasons, from wear and tear right through to moisture causing the glue to become loose.

The bristles have become stiff

This is normally the case if you haven't actually bothered to clean your makeup brushes at all. You'll find that makeup product will become clogged up in the bristles. The product will then harden, therefore making the bristles far less flexible and more stiff. Not only does this make the makeup brush ineffective, but it can cause harm to your skin. Throw it away and get a new one as soon as possible.

The makeup products have stopped applying smoothly

This follows on, somewhat, from the previous point. If your makeup brush is clogged up or is damaged from continuous use, then it renders it useless at applying makeup products, especially liquid makeup products like foundations and blushes. If your makeup is applying as well as it did before, then look for a makeup brush replacement as soon as possible.

They have an odd odour

A sure way of knowing that you need to get some new makeup brushes is that your old ones have started to smell. This can be the case even if you've religiously cleaned them. If you notice a strange smell as you apply your makeup, then look seriously at getting some replacement makeup brushes.

You're experiencing breakouts

If a makeup brush is dirty and filled with bacteria, then it can cause breakouts and rashes on the skin. If you have spots that won't go away, isolated to the face alone, then the makeup brush could be the culprit here. If you've noticed such a correlation, then throw your old makeup brush away and get a new one as soon as possible.
