4 Questions YOU Should Ask During Your Job Interview
When it comes to job interviews, it can feel very much like a one-way street. You might think that you're there to impress your potential employer. While that part is true, they also have to make the role look attractive to you.
It's a two-way street, which is something that some businesses always forget. As such, whether they ask you if you have any questions for them, or if you simply tell them that you wish to ask them some questions, here are some fundamental ones that I would ask, if it was me.
1. What does a typical day look like?
You need to know what you're getting yourself into. A job is a huge commitment. You will spend the majority of your time doing that job, performing those tasks and being in that environment. If it's not what you want from a career, then maybe the role, or the business, isn't for you.
2. What opportunities are there for training & progression?
If you're interested in moving further on in your career, or if you're someone who will get bored of the work you're doing, knowing full well you strive on progression and promotions, then you need to know what the scope looks like in terms of getting on in your career. Is there an opportunity for you to learn some new skills? It's a good question to ask if that a priority of yours.
3. What do you enjoy about the job?
One that I find effective is to ask the interviewer what THEY like about their job and the business they work for. What is something positive that they can say about the company and their role in it? This should tell you everything you need to know. Especially if they take a while to think of something. It's a good one as it can, sometimes, catch them off guard.
4. What is my annual leave allowance & are bank holidays included?
They need to be clear with you about your annual leave allowance. They also need to be upfront with you about any bank holidays you're allowed, or not. Depending on the industry you want to work in, these things will differ.
For example, retail and healthcare will have different rules on Bank Holidays than office jobs. If having a good work/life balance is something important to you, then make sure you ask the right questions, this being one of them.
