How to Prepare to Host Overnight Guests

I love hosting overnight guests, mainly because they're people that I love and want to spend some solid, quality time with. As they've made the effort to come to our home, I like to make sure that they're well looked after and cared for, and part of that includes ensuring the room they're staying in is comfortable, warm and inviting. So how do I prepare for my overnight guests? Let me take you through it in this article.

Make the space as comfortable as possible

You can interpret this one how you like. I interpret "comfortable" as providing clean towels, bed sheets and some cushions. I also like to supply a mirror, a bin and I keep all surfaces clean and clear so that my guests can put their things down where they like.

I also like to leave charging cables and flannels, just in case. You never know what your guests might need during their stay that they may not want to ask for. Sometimes, I'll leave feminine hygiene products in there as well, just for good measure.

Clean

While this might sound like an obvious step in preparing to host overnight guests, it's an easy one to miss in all the hustle and bustle. I like to wipe everything down, give the place a dust and a vacuum and I also like to air the room out, leaving the window open for a few hours before my guests arrive.

Provide some fresh, fluffy towels

Everyone loves a clean, fresh and fluffy towel. If I know I'm going to be receiving guests, I will make sure that the towels have been cleaned and dried with just a few days. This makes sure that they're as fresh and as clean as possible. Once they're ready, I will neatly fold them and place them on the end of the bed for my guests to use at their leisure.

Make sure the sheets are clean

While this might seem like a given, can be all too easy to leave the sheets on after another guest has departed, and then you forget that they have been slept in. If you want to make sure that your overnight guests are snuggling down in fresh, clean sheets, then strip the bed after your last guests have left, but don't wash the sheets again until two or three days before your new guests arrive. If you can, dry them outdoors on a washing line for maximum freshness.

Mop the floor

You want to make sure that your guests feel comfortable to walk about freely, either with or without something on their feet. You also want to make sure that their belongings will be safe and clean when placed on the floor. Not to mention it just adds another element of cleanliness and care to their experience.

I always like to give the floor a good clean before and after anyone stays in our guest room. While this is simple enough with laminate or hard-wood floors, like our flooring, it doesn't hurt to give a carpeted room a good  and thorough vacuum before guests arrive.
