5 Things You Can Do with Leftover White Wine
Whether you're a white wine drinker, mainly, or just like a change every now and again, we've all had a bottle of wine in the fridge that we had forgotten about. Maybe you bought it for a friend who couldn't polish the bottle off and now you have some white wine to get rid of, because you won't drink it.
Well I've been there too, but I wanted to find out a few ways in which I could use the white wine up, rather than just tip it down the sink. Here are a five things you can do with leftover white wine that you might not have thought about.
1. Make a mulled wine
Mulled wine isn't just made with red wine, and it's not just a drink reserved for Christmas. To knock the festive feel on the head, use a white wine instead, almost like a warm sangria. It can be spiced up in much the same way as red mulled wine, but get creative. White wine is a lot lighter and more fruity, so the world is your oyster when it comes to making your own white mulled wine.
2. Use it in a sauce
We've all made pasta, stews and even risottos with wine before, so why not choose a delicious recipe that involves pouring in some white wine, so as not to waste it? Risotto is a really quick and easy meal to whip up, even mid-week. In fact, you might already have those ingredients in your pantry; it's THAT easy to do.
3. Mix it with lemonade
If you're not really a white wine drinker, or if you has some particularly dry white wine that needs to be got rid of, then mix it with lemonade and drink it in that capacity. This will sweeten it up a little, making it better for the fruitier palette.
4. Poach some fruit
A great way of poaching fruit that you want to keep is to house it in leftover white wine. You can use a wide range of containers, including glass masonry jars. To save some money, you could hold back some jam jars or pasta sauce jars to keep your fruit in.
Put your fruit in first and then pour the leftover white wine in afterwards, filling it up to the brim. Screw the lid on tightly and leave for as long as the recipe says. You could even try your hand at some fancy flambeed desserts, using pears as a popular fruit to heat up in white wine.
5. Freeze it
Whether you use it in your own wine to cool down a glass of white or keep it in the freezer ready to cook with, then freezing it would be a good way to go. While it is alcohol, it might not freeze completely, so keep this in mind if you're wanting to use leftover white wine as a substitution for water ice cubes, which can water a drink down.
