What to Pack for a Rambling Weekend Away

We all love a weekend away, a short break to refresh from the busy working week. But what if your weekend involves long walks, rolling hills and the odd flock of sheep? If that sounds like your ideal mini-break, then here are some bits and bobs you may find useful to pack for your rambling vay-cay. If I've missed anything, leave your must-pack items in the comments below! I'd love to hear your suggestions :)

Walking Boots of a Comfortable Fit

It's really important that you have walking boots that fit perfectly. They're a fundamental foundation of any enjoyable walking holiday. The right boots can help reduce the chances of acquiring sore feet, ensuring you enjoy a blister-free stroll.

The best walking boots will have great ankle support, with laces that tie all the way up the shoe. They should have excellent grip, designed to cope with slippery, uneven paths, muddy fields and wet terrain. Your boots should be solid, but lightweight and be made of breathable, waterproof material, providing your feet with ultimate comfort. Walking boots are definitely worth the financial investment.

A Waterproof Coat/Jacket

This one is essential. You want a coat which will be suitable for all weathers. Light enough for warmer days, but warm enough for colder temperatures. You'll need something breathable, but wind and water resistant. For the more fashion conscious, perhaps pick a practical colour, dark shades are usual go-tos for the avid walkers.

You'll want a jacket with zip fastenings and plenty of pockets for small bits and bobs. Together with your shoes, it's worth investing the extra cash to make sure you're getting a good quality, durable jacket that you know you'll be able to keep using and using.

Layers, Layers & More Layers

Layers are so useful, especially when you're walking. In fact, I can't really express their importance enough! Whether you start your walk with plenty of layers on or put them all in a back pack ready for later, layers are essential to control body temperature, especially if you're going to be walking up hills etc. Just make sure you're not never too hot or too cold. But it's also important that, no matter how warm you get at the top of Snowdon (for example) never take all of your layers off, you don't want the onset of hypothermia!

Basic First Aid

This is an important one, but it's also something not a lot of people think about when they go walking. Even if you just a small box or little bag on you with some essential bits, it could make all the difference when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere without a phone signal. Your little first aid kit should include a fabric sling, some plasters of varying sizes, blister plasters (trust me on this one), travel sized antiseptic cream (or TCP) and gauze pieces. You can pack more or take less if you'd prefer, but the basics are always handy!

Refillable Water Bottle/Flask

This one is also important. Staying hydrated is imperative on any walking trip. A flask would be ideal for keeping cold drinks cool and hot drinks warm (depending on your preference). I don't recommend taking flasks of coffee as it can make you more dehydrated than anything. Normal breakfast or green tea would be better. Although I prefer to take cold drinks with me instead.

A Quality Pair of Walking Socks

Having a good pair of walking socks is almost as important as having a great pair of walking boots. These will prevent you getting blisters the size of Saturn (I speak from experience on this one). Make sure they're good quality, thick and are specially designed for long walks across different terrains. You'll thank me later ;)

  1. I like the refillable flask + first aid tip! I haven't been walking because it's been super hot where I live. But I plan to do it again once autumn rolls around!
