How to Prepare Your Home for Spring
Spring has finally rolled around and that only means one thing - a fresh start. From Easter to blooming flowers after the winter, spring means a whole load of new beginnings and I believe that should stretch to the home.
Where our's is in a state of disrepair right now as we renovate the hallway, stairs and landing, there are other parts of our house that have been unaffected by the upheaval and I make it my mission to keep those places in top condition, especially at the start of the new season. Here's what I do to prepare our home for springtime :)
Give your home a thorough clean
We have all heard of a spring clean, so much so it's become almost common practice at this time of year. Spring cleaning shouldn't involve blocking out an entire weekend so you can give your house a once over. Take it in stages and enjoy it! I'll do the bedrooms one day, the home office the next, the living room and dining room another day and the kitchen a different day.
It's all about planning and not burning yourself out or doing too much too quickly. Make sure you pay attention to things you wouldn't normally do, like giving the windows a clean or cleaning out the oven or the microwave. Something I like to do is clean the kitchen cupboards and the inside of the fridge. Not that I don't do this throughout the year, but it's not a weekly occurrence.
Declutter your wardrobe
We've all got things in our wardrobes that we don't wear anymore and considering spring is all about making a fresh start, it's the best time to have a clear out of things you no longer need or want, making room for new clothes and fashion items.
Don't throw things out, give them to charity instead or ask friends and family if they would like them before you give them away. Do your bit for the environment by refraining from throwing them away to other people. Ask your local charity shop if they are able to take rags. If so, then give those away as well, labelling the bag so they know that those garments are no good.
Organise your under-the-stairs cupboard
The under stairs cupboard is a notorious place to throw things in and then forget about. Ours has a load of different things in it, from moss poles and shoe horns to paint cans and vacuum cleaners, there's all sorts of clutter in our under stairs cupboard. In all honesty, it does need a good clear out, so that's something I like to do around spring time.
Refresh your at-home workspace
If you work from home, then you'll know the importance of having a clear workspace. I like to give mine an overhaul, swapping out the chair or changing the monitor or keyboard I use. Not because I'm bored, but because they get worn out, haha. Even if you add a plant to your desk or chuck away all those pens that have run out of ink, it all has an advantageous effect on how you work, especially from home.
Defrost your freezer
This is something we all forget to do. But it's also something we all put off, because it takes that much time and preparation. It can be disruptive to everyday life, especially if you have a lot of frozen food or like to keep things like bread and other things in it. But it's very necessary and we all forget to do it. Make sure you add it to your spring preparation list!
Swap out darker colours for lighter ones
I don't mean you should go out and paint all of your walls different colours. What I mean is, try and swap out dark furnishings for lighter ones, take your dark-coloured candles down and put up your lighter ones. Swap your Christmas cactus for a bouquet of daffodils. There's so much you can do to brighten up your home, so make sure you take every opportunity to lighten up the small things.
Add some fresh flowers
I've already touched on this, but during spring, I like to have a bunch of fresh flowers in the window. Even if it's a few daffodils or some tulips. I love the colours. At springtime, I opt for white, yellow or pink because it just reminds me of Easter and brighter, lighter days. Fresh flowers add something to a home that plants or faux alternatives cannot. Buy in some fresh flowers. You can pick up some daffodils for as little as £1.
Sort through the garden shed and/or your garage
This is something we really need to do this spring. Our garage is full of stuff and a lot of it needs to go to the tip, after ripping off a lot of old skirting boards and architraves. We have lots of stuff flapping around the garage, including gardening tools, weed killer, a broom, a garden table, some deck chairs, car shampoo, builders buckets and loads of other things. We need to have a good rummage around and get rid of things we no longer need or use or that are broken and can be replaced. This is your sign to go and clear out your garage and/or shed :)
Get your garden ready for entertaining
This is something we need to do, but that I'm dreading. Our garden is a bit of a mismatch or plants and paving slabs, so it's a bit shabby, but it does the trick if you want to sit at a garden table or have a BBQ. What we need to do is sweep up the leaves and pull up the weeds, ready for people to walk out and enjoy the spring sunshine.
