46 Things to Ask a Wedding Venue Before You Book it

We've booked our wedding venue and the church, finally! How exciting is that? I won't tell you when it is, but you won't have too long to wait for some wedding and marriage content. Anyway, there have been a few things we've learnt throughout the process that we wouldn't have known prior to starting our wedding venue journey. So I wondered about writing a blog post all about things you should ask a wedding venue before committing, because it's something I would have liked to know before we started on our venture. But you live and you learn!

  1. How long can I hold a date for, provisionally?
  2. How many guests can you accommodate both in the daytime and in the evening?
  3. Is the venue licensed for civil ceremonies?
  4. Is the venue available for exclusive hire?
  5. Who is the point of contact on the run up to the wedding?
  6. Do I have to use recommended suppliers or can I go elsewhere?
  7. Is there onsite accommodation?
  8. Will there be enough parking for everyone?
  9. What time can be the venue be accessed?
  10. Is there somewhere for us to get ready in the morning?
  11. What are your changeover plans?
  12. Are you flexible with the timings of the day?
  13. Is it possible to get married outside?
  14. Do you have any decor restrictions?
  15. Do you allow fireworks?
  16. Is there a menu tasting option available within the catering cost?
  17. Are you able to cater for vegetarians, vegans and people with dietary requirements?
  18. Is there an in-house catering team?
  19. Is linen and crockery included in the venue hire/package price?
  20. Is there a cake-cutting/corkage fee?
  21. Can we bring our own alcohol?
  22. Do you provide the utensils and cake stand?
  23. How many people can be seated at one table?
  24. What are your evening food options?
  25. Is there room for a live band or a DJ setup?
  26. Do you have a bar menu with prices?
  27. Does the bar accept cash and/or card?
  28. Are we able to plug an iPhone or an iPod into a sound system?
  29. What time will the evening reception need to finish?
  30. Do you have disabled access?
  31. Where are your toilets and how many are there?
  32. Is there somewhere we'll be able to store our wedding gifts securely?
  33. Can you operate on minimum spend rather than minimum numbers? (This should just be based on price per head, i.e. food and drink, and not on accommodation, music, ceremony etc)
  34. How much is the initial deposit?
  35. When is the final payment due?
  36. Can we pay off the full balance in instalments?
  37. Is VAT included in the price?
  38. Are there any additional extra costs, like cleaners etc
  39. Is your quote subject to change with regards to inflation?
  40. Is your quote a fixed price?
  41. If it is a fixed price, can that be written into the contract before we sign it?
  42. What is your cancellation policy?
  43. Are there any venue restrictions?
  44. Do you have public liability insurance?
  45. Is wedding insurance something we would have to put in place or can you do that for us?
  46. Is there an option to change some elements to the package on the run up to the wedding?
