'A Christmas Carol' at Nottingham Playhouse

A Christmas Carol is currently on at the Nottingham Playhouse, running right up to the 18th of this month. We went to go and see it on Halloween, and it was truly a treat to witness. An adapted performance that was heavily based on the classic Charles Dickens novel by the great Mark Gatiss, the story was, from start to finish, undoubtedly true to the incredible original book, even down to the lines that were, seemingly, carefully pulled from the utterly seamless work of fiction.

Where the script was written by a mastermind, the cast were also out of this world. The roles were shared out equally, with each cast member having multiple roles to play. This only amplified their talent, showing that they could adapt their acting skill and style to what was required for that scene. Going from cold-hearted and selfish characters to personas that you couldn't help but love. Starring the brilliant Keith Allen as Scrooge and Peter Forbes as Jacob Marley, the casting was genius throughout.

The effects were also incredible. I was dubious about how they were going to change the scenes and how they were going to execute the three spirits visiting Scrooge at home. It seemed like a logistical nightmare that actually pulled off seamlessly, so hats off to the stage designers and the props departments. They really do wonderful work and are, to me, considered to be the unsung heroes of any stage play.

There was also a slight twist on the end of the theatre performance that no one saw coming. In fact, it actually made a few people gasp as they started to realise who was who and how it would end. It really was a heart-warming start to the festive season, making me emotional towards the end as carols were being sung, with Scrooge watching earnestly on.

I highly-recommend that you give this a watch because you'll witness a quality stage play for a fraction of the price of something that would be shown in the West End. In fact, I feel like if it was shown in the West End, it would carry a hefty ticket price. Whether you're in it for the spooky factor or to feel an early glimmer of Christmas, go and watch A Christmas Carol at the Nottingham Playhouse! Get your tickets here.
