5 Ways to Feel More Confident at the Gym
Going back to the gym, especially if you've not been for a while after COVID, can be a daunting thing to do. We've just back into it after using running as a free way to stay active. But it got to the point where I wanted to shape my arms and legs.
I tried pilates and some workout videos on YouTube, but it's just not the same as using the equipment that the gym has to offer. But I have grappled with issues of self-confidence and body confidence when at the gym, so I thought I'd share with you how I feel more confident when we go to the gym.
1. Wear something that makes you feel good
Wearing something that you feel comfortable in and that you feel good in can make all the difference when it comes to going to the gym. Not only will you look the part, but you'll also feel the part. Your mindset plays an important role in how confident you feel, so if you wear something that you feel comfortable in, you'll be well away.
2. Know how to use the equipment
What you should do, especially if you haven't been before or if you can't remember, is to make sure you know how to operate the equipment. Much of it is self-explanatory, like the cardio equipment, but some of the weight-lifting stuff is a bit more complicated.
They usually have some pictures on the side of it that will explain how you use it, but more often than not, there will be someone knocking around who works there who will be able to telly you how to operate it, giving you a demo if you so wish. Once you've given it a go yourself and you've got the hang of it, you'll soon feel more confident whilst working out.
3. Go in with a plan
There's nothing more boring or more time-wasting than walking around the gym looking for things to do. Go in with a plan. Do you want to do a mixture of both cardio and weight lifting or do you want to just focus on strength and conditioning?
Do you want to work out your arms, chest and shoulders or your legs, buttocks and abs? Know which machines you need to use to target those areas and you'll be in a better position to plan your workout. If you go around the joint looking like you know what you doing, because you do, then you'll soon see a confidence boost at the gym.
4. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing
Everyone is going on their own weight loss or weight maintenance journey. We all have our own goals, whether you're training for a marathon or are just looking to get fitter, it shouldn't matter to you what anyone else is doing and they shouldn't be worrying about what you're doing. You do what you want, stick to your limits until you're ready to push yourself further and don't look at anyone else.
5. Go during off-peak hours
There's nothing more stressful than going to the gym when it's busy. You can't get on the machines you want, there's always a queue for weight lifting machines and the only cardio equipment available is the sit-down bike. The best thing to do is to go during off-peak hours. Not only will the machines be available, but it's also much quieter - taking the pressure off of those who worry about people judging them, although I doubt anyone else in the gym is going to judge you for going to the gym.
