5 Tips for Choosing Wedding Rings

Weddings are so stressful to organise. It has been non-stop planning for over a year, and where it has been fun, it's now something that we're looking forward to on the day. But one of the really nice, stand-out parts of wedding planning, for me personally, was choosing our wedding rings.

I think that's because it was something we could do together that was for each other and not have anyone else in mind or other people to think about. It was a really personal, loving part of wedding planning.

So if you're getting married soon and are in need of some wedding rings but don't actually know where to start, then don't worry because I've got your back :) Here are five tips for choosing the perfect wedding rings to signal the rest of your lives together!

1. Choose something that compliments your engagement ring

When it comes to you, ladies, you want to choose a wedding ring that will complement your engagement ring. Where you don't have to worry necessarily if you're planning on wearing your wedding band on its own, it's more important if you're wanting to wear your rings stacked, which is my plan.

One day I might share what my wedding band looks like, but for now I'm going to keep it under my hat. Either way, if you want to wear the rings together, make sure the wedding band you choose goes with your engagement ring - it makes it look more like a pair rather than a stand-alone piece of jewellery.

2. Stay within your financial means

It can be so easy to get carried away with all of the options you have available to you when it comes to choosing wedding rings, whether you're shopping as a man or as a woman. When you go into the jewellers to look at rings, tell them what your budget is and make sure they only show you rings that fall within that.

The issue comes when they start showing you rings that are out of your price range. Don't be tempted by all of the bling. A wedding band is something you wear to symbolise your marriage and not as a fashion statement or status symbol. Follow your heart when it comes to choosing wedding rings.

3. Make sure it's comfortable to wear

You're going to be wearing your wedding band all the time. It's something that you will always be wearing, come rain or shine. It's very unlikely that you'll end up taking it off, so make sure that the wedding band you choose is practical and comfortable. There's no point going for a ring with a huge stone in it because you'll only catch it on everything, for example.

Wedding bands are designed to be a simple signal to others that you're married, but wedding band designs have changed a lot over the years. Where simple designs are no longer the trend, there are still some very simple designs that also reflect your personality without being boring.

4. Go shopping for them as a couple

Wedding ring shopping is no fun on your own. It's always been something that you do as a couple, and that's what we did. It's something that makes the whole thing fun and personal. That and it's always good to have a second opinion on something that you like. In addition, it's tradition for the groom to buy the bride's ring and vice-a-versa.

So it also means that you're definitely spending within your means, especially if one of you has more of a grasp on your finances than the other, or if you're paying for both rings out of the same pot. Make sure you're both on the same page financially and choice-wise and shop for your wedding rings together.

5. Start shopping for wedding rings about 6 months beforehand

It can be very easy to get excited and start shopping for wedding rings way too far in advance. Don't do this. Usually because you could either gain weight or lose weight in that time on the run up to your wedding, and it will then be very difficult to have it resized in time for the big day.

We chose our wedding rings about four or five months before, banking on the fact that we aren't going to get sausage fingers before March. Be sensible when it comes to wedding ring shopping. You also need to consider the time it takes for rings to be made or ordered in from new. Think about what you want and shop in a reasonable time frame that suits your needs.
