How to Look After Autumn Heather
Heather are famous for requiring very little care and attention, but there are things you need to do throughout the autumn season that keeps the plants growing and in top condition. From keeping their soil acidic to giving them a Chelsea chop, here's how to look after autumn heather.
1. Feed them during the growing season
Feed heather during the autumn season, so anywhere from September right through to the spring, essentially. Make sure you use a feed that is ericaceous rather than a general feed for all plants. Do this once every week or so for the best results.
2. Mulch the soil it's planted in
Mulch is a great way to keep the soil acidic and to regulate the quality of the soil. Apply the mulch to the soil at the very base of the plant, being careful not to let the mulch pile up towards or over the flowering part of the plant - this could rot away the live, flowering parts.
3. Cut heather back to the base after they've flowered
Once they've flowered, you should be cutting the heather back down to the base. This stops them from becoming leggy and low quality. If you don't cut them back, you'll notice less flowering and the plant will suffer as a result. As such, once the flowers have died back, you should cut it down to the wood. Heather doesn't grow well from old wood, just FYI.
