6 Tips for Getting Around San Francisco On the Trolley Bus

Are you planning a trip to San Francisco? If so,I'm sure that the trolley buses will be on your bucket list of things to do while you're there. Most the time, tourists like to use the trolley buses as a way of getting around the city in style.

That's because the trolley buses run far and wide, so you'll be able to get to where you need to be using the efficient transportation system. However, if you've never done it before, it can be quite confusing. That's why I thought I'd give you some hints and tips for getting around San Francisco using the trolley buses!

1. Remember that you can start your journey at any point along the route

Despite long queues at the start of the line, you can actually catch the trolley buses at any point. Let's say you've walked to Lombard Street and you want to get the trolley bus back to the bottom, or right up to the top, then you can hop onto the trolley bus at any point along the street, provided you're stood at a designated stop.

2. You can acquire your ticket at the start of the route or by using an app

These are the only two ways in which to secure a ride on these famous trolley buses. You cannot pay the conductor cash to ride. You can either purchase your ticket at the start of the route, near Ghirardelli square, or you can purchase them on a dedicated app. The app you need to download is detailed on the sides of the trolley bus stops.

3. Choose your ticket carefully as some won't allow you to hop on & hop off when you like throughout the day

When it comes to choosing your ticket, it's a lot more straight forward if you go to the ticket office at the start of the line. This is because you can simply tell the person in the booth what you'd like and they will make sure you get the right ticket.

If you're buying your ticket on the app, then you need to read the conditions carefully before making your purchase. Some tickets offer single rides, which cannot be used in a hop-on-hop-off basis. If that's what you're wanting, then you need to get the all day ticket, which will be valid until the line stops running, which is usually 11pm.

4. They run from 7am to 11pm

If you're planning on relying on the trolley buses to get around San Francisco, then you should know that they start running at 7am and stop running at 11pm. Don't get caught out at night on the wrong side of the city from where you're staying. Be aware of the time when you're out and about and counting on the trolley buses to get you back to your hotel.

5. There are different lines that run in different directions & take you to different streets - do your research

If there are certain streets you want to visit, such as Lombard Street, then you should know that there's not just one line that will take you there. There are several lines that run both up and down the hills and along the bottom of the city, around Fisherman's Wharf.

Make sure you do your research if you're wanting to get across the city using the trolley buses. Know which lines go where and be sure to let someone on the trolley bus know that you'd like to get off, otherwise they'll keep going (unless someone is stood at the stop waiting to get on).

6. For the ultimate experience, ride the trolley bus by hanging onto the sides

Although it might seem safer and more secure to sit down while riding the trolley bus, especially when you go down steep hills, there's nothing quite like riding the trolley bus by handing onto the handle bars and standing on the outside ledge. Not only does it give you a different perspective, but there's something exhilarating about feeling the air roll off the bay, giving you a delightful breeze when the sun is shining.
