How to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh for As Long As Possible

Fresh cut flowers are a beautiful addition around any home. But they're not as cheap as they once were, which is why it's important for you to keep them going for as long as possible. If you, like me, love to have some fresh flowers around the home, especially at this time of year, then here are some of my tried and tested tips for keeping them fresh for longer.

Give them water as soon as possible

As soon as you take the flowers out of the water, they will begin to dry out and the stems will start to close up at the ends. This is why, when you get home, you should trim the stem ends, at an angle, and place the flowers in a fresh vase of water. You'll notice that they'll soon start to perk up again.

Keep the stems clean

Every two or three days, when you come to change the water (which we'll talk more about in a moment), you should trim the stems and also take a clean piece of kitchen roll and wipe them down. You should also remove any leaves or other foliage that might sit in the water.

This is because they can break down, therefore infecting the water the flowers sit in. This will slash their lifespan. Keep the stems clean, change the water and trim the stem ends if you want to keep the fresh flowers alive for as long as possible.

Change the water every 2/3 days

Replace the water every two or three days, even if it looks ok. By changing the water, swapping it for a fresh supply, it prevents bacteria from growing and clogging up the cut stems. If the stem ends are blocked, it can't get the moisture it needs. Replacing the water will make sure your cut flowers constantly have something to drink, keeping them alive for longer as a result.

Feed them

When it comes to feeding the cut flowers you have, many of them, when bought from a supermarket, will come with the right flower food. If, however, you don't have any food for cut flowers, then you can make your own. Here's a recipe you can follow for flower food.

Don't put them in direct sunlight

Sunlight can burn petals and stems. It can also stunt growth. Most plants and flowers like moderate light levels, not direct sunlight. You should also keep them away from air vents, radiators, electric heaters and wood-burning stoves.
