7 Things I Did Before the Age of 30 That I Thought I Wouldn't

I turned thirty two days ago, and it got me thinking about what I had actually done in my life so far. What have I achieved throughout my first thirty years on the planet?

In fact, most of the things on this list were things that I never thought I would do, if we spoke to my twenty-year-old self. In fact, I think if I went back in time and told her what I'd been doing, she wouldn't believe me! So let me tell you everything that i have done throughout my first thirty years that I didn't think I would!

1. Get married

Of course, the top one would have to be getting married. Tom and I have been together nine years this year and we recently celebrated our first wedding anniversary, which has gone so quickly. But getting married, at any point in life, wasn't something I ever thought I would do.

It was something that other people did. But when I met Tom, it was the first time I really thought that actually, yes, I will actually get married at some point, I just didn't know when. We got married five days before my 29th birthday, so I was cutting it fine, but it was still before the age of thirty!

2. Buy a house

Something else that society tells you is unachievable is buying a house, which is why I didn't think it would ever happen. It seemed like we would be stuck in rented, lining someone else's pockets, forever.

But little did I know that we were actually on track to buying our first house. It's something that, ten years ago, I would have thought was unachievable, but it's something I have managed to do before I turned thirty.

3. Go to some amazing places

Over the years, I've been lucky enough to visit some beautiful places. From Spain and France to the USA and Germany, I've had an absolute whale of a time going here, there and everywhere. I visited places that I didn't think I'd see in my wildest dreams.

They included places like New York, San Francisco, Yosemite, Hollywood, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Nashville, Memphis, Graceland, the Kennedy Space Centre, Universal Orlando, Walt Disney World, Disneyland in California and so on.

They're all places that I've visited that I didn't think I'd see, at least not before the age of thirty and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to go to those places and see those things.

4. Pass my driving test

I absolutely hated having driving lessons. I hated driving and everything that went along with it. It got to the point where I really just wanted to give up and not bother driving at all, but I am so glad that I kept going with it, despite hating it so much.

I don't think I've ever spoken to anyone who has passed their driving test who actually enjoyed their lessons. I only know that I was so relieved when I passed it during lockdown. I couldn't have been happier. Again, it's something that I didn't think I would ever do, let alone do it before the age of thirty.

5. Experience a worldwide pandemic

I don't think this part of life was something that was ever on anyone's bucket list. But it still counts as something that happened to me before the age of thirty that I thought would never happen. In fact, the thought of it even being a possibility never crossed my mind, and that will be the same for everyone.

6. Get a degree

Much like passing my driving test, getting my degree seemed like an impossible task. I enjoyed it, but there was a lot that happened in my personal life during that time which made it painful and more challenging.

Graduating was somewhat of a relief. I was so close to deferring my progress until i felt ready, mentally, to get back on the saddle with it all, but I was already an older student and I didn't want to put it off any longer, so I just got on with it.

But getting my degree wasn't something I thought would happen before I turned thirty, because I just didn't think I had it in me. But here we are now, seven years later, with the scroll to show for it.
