A Guide to Finding Your Signature Perfume Scent

Perfume is a tricky thing to buy. It's like ordering lipstick online, you don't know what it's going to be like until you see it and use it in the flesh. It's even more difficult, however, finding your signature scent, especially if you have trouble finding a perfume you actually like in the first place. My signature scent has been 'La Vie Est Belle' by Lancome, and it has been for the last ten years or so. But how did I find it? Let me tell you how you can find your signature fragrance in the same way I did, a decade ago.

Understand what's meant by 'signature scent'

What is a signature scent? It's more than just a fragrance worn on the daily. It's a perfume that defines you through and through. It's an expression of your identity and an essence of you even after you've left the room. While you may dabble in other scents through the years, a signature scent is one you will always keep coming back to and have stocked up at all times. But how can you find your very own signature scent? Let's take a look.

Sample, sample, sample

How can you know what you like without sampling the perfume first? Try different scents by spritzing them on a piece of card and then giving them a sniff. If it's not for you, then move on and try something else until you find a fragrance that stands out to you and that you love.

Make sure it's a scent that you can see yourself wearing on the daily, because that's the scent that people will start recognising you by. It got to the point where my mum would smell my signature scent in the shops and think of me, as do a lot of other people. It's nice when people are reminded of you when they smell a nice perfume. It means you've done it right when it comes to finding a signature fragrance.

Think about what that scent says about you

Are you someone who prefers to stand out from the crowd or do you want to blend in more? Do you want to turn heads with the scent you're wearing or would you prefer something more understated? If you're someone who is fun and gregarious, then a timeless scent might not be for you.

You might find something more invigorating or experimental is right up your street instead. You need to feel completely at home with the scent you choose, so pick something that makes you feel comfortable, but a million dollars at the same time.

Don't fall for the trends

Refrain from choosing a perfume based on its current popularity. Perfume is very subjective. What one person will like, another might not. Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's something you're going to like. It's an expensive mistake to make. Choose a perfume because YOU like it, and not because it's on trend at the moment.

Know the fragrance families

You need to know what each fragrance family is and what that could mean for the scent it gives off. For example, spicy and amber fragrances are warm and heavy, which are great for winter or nighttime wear.

Fruity or citrus fragrances are lighter, making them ideal for wearing during the summer or throughout the day. Woody scents are considered to be masculine, while floral ones are typically more feminine. While there aren't any rules, it's important that you know what those fragrance families mean for the scent you're choosing.
