Every time I tell someone that I work from home 100% of the time, they always ask me what my day consists of. It surprises me every time because surely the answer is quite self-explanatory. But then it got me thinking, maybe it's not so obvious.
People have images in their mind of me sitting at a laptop all day, and while that is mostly true, there are some things I do throughout the day to break things up a bit, without compromising the work I do. For those who don't know I'm a copywriter working for a digital marketing agency.
It involves a lot of writing, mainly articles, press releases and website copy. But a lot of my role involves research. This is because I don't know everything about everything. I need to know what I'm writing about before I go and put pen to paper.
So, now you have an idea of what my role consists of, although it does also involve SEO, keyword research, idea generation and more, let me take you through a day in my life as someone who works from home 100% of the time.
8-9am: Coffee, breakfast & relaxing
Between 8-9am, I'll wake up, have a coffee, a spot of breakfast and I'll either watch a bit of the morning news, read it on my iPad or work a little on my blog before I have to log on. Generally, weekday mornings are quite chilled before work starts, so I can start the working day with a fresh and awake mind.
9am-12pm: Emails, getting started & drinking more coffee
Once I log on at 9am, the morning greetings are done, I'll check the emails that came through from the previous evening or over the weekend (if it's a Monday morning) and I'll start work. Sometimes, I'll still have the coffee with me that I made before I logged on.
So it's nice to finish that while I get some work done. As a copywriter, this often involves doing some article research, writing an article or coming up with some new ideas. At around 10:30, I'll go and make another coffee to take me right up to lunchtime.
12-2pm: Lunch hour
I tend to take my lunch break any time between 12-2pm. This is quite typical of most workplaces, but the time I go on lunch will largely depend on what I'm working on and how far I've got with it. This is unless I have to go and run and errand in my lunch hour.
Sometimes I might nip to the shops for a bit milk or bread, but most of the time, I'm at home watching something on Netflix, haha. When the weather is nice, we might go for a walk around the block just to stretch our legs. When I say "we", I mean my husband and I, haha.
2-3:30pm: More working & 'threesies'
Of course, when I get back from my lunch hour, I'll check my emails and then do a bit more work. Once I've settled in and I know what I'm doing, we'll have 'threesies'. This usually consists of a coffee and a biscuit at around 3/3:30pm-ish. By this time in the day, I would probably have some music on by now as well to listen to while I work.
3:30-5pm: Winding down
By this time in the day, I would have had most of the work done that I needed to get done. I still work right up until 5pm, but I won't start any new projects that are long or complex. I usually like to save that work for a new day when I have more time to spend on it.
At this time in the day, I'll often do some work that isn't as intense, starting to wind down for the end of the day, leaving me something for me to get my teeth into the following day.
5-11pm: Dinner, house stuff & chilling out
No two evenings are the same in our house between these hours. One night we could be in all evening and watching the telly, but another night we could be grouting tiles and going to Wickes at 7:30pm at night. There really is no in between.
It will always consist of having dinner, but what we do after that is anyone's guess, haha. We've just finished fitting our new kitchen, so things with the house will wind down in terms of DIY. Instead, we'll be spending our evenings at places like IKEA and Dunlem for things like shelves, blinds and home accessories to make the kitchen feel more homely.
We're also on the hunt for a new dining table, so that will involve some visits to a few furniture stores as well. By the time we get home, especially if we've done a weekly shop, it can be about 9:30pm. So we watch a bit of telly, have a cuppa, go in the shower and then go to bed, all to start all over again the next day!
