5 Ways to Enjoy the Season if You're Not a "Winter Person"

Winter can be a difficult season for many people, whether it's the shorter days or the colder weather, there is always something a little bit miserable about the winter period and it can have an effect on our mood. I wouldn't really say I was a winter person, I'm more of a spring gal, because that's when the days grow longer and the plants start to flower again. But we all have to get through the coldest season of the year, so here's how I cope with the winter season, as someone who isn't, really, a winter person.

1. Go on some winter walks

Whenever I have the time, I am always looking to take a stroll, even if it's around the block. I find this most easy around the Christmas period so I can have a look around at all of the lights that people have put up around the village. I can't take a long look at them in the car, so a cold and brisk walk with a take-out coffee or hot chocolate that I've brought with me from home to look at the lights and festivities is all the motivation I need to get out and go for a walk when the weather isn't so kind to us.

2. Make some winter plans

Christmas is a great time to make some plans, but when the New Year comes and goes, we don't always have things to look forward to anymore. So something I like to do is make sure I have something planned for either the first or second week of January, even if it's dinner or lunch with friends. Literally anything that means I get to properly make an effort when it comes to getting ready, even if it's a trip to the garden centre for a cream tea, it instantly makes me feel better, every single time. You'll also find that loads of places will be less busy than on the run up to, and during, the Christmas season. The trick is to always have something to look forward to as the new year starts.

3. Make a list of things you love

It can make us miserable, especially when there's no natural light, the sunshine has gone and the days are short and dark. So to help snap me out of the winter funk, I will make a list of everything I love and feel grateful for, in order to boost my mood. Whether it's the fact that I managed to fit a workout in or if Tom cooked me a nice meal, I will jot it down and it makes me smile every time. It puts me in a nicer, lighter mood and it's also something I can look back on, so the smiles last way beyond the day I made the list initially.

4. Do your best to keep warm

Keeping warm can be difficult in this day and age, especially with the price of energy bills sky-rocketing in recent years. Fortunately, we have a log burner, so it's a little easier for us to get toasty in the winter, but even if you have the heating on just enough so that you're warm with a blanket on a hot beverage to wrap your fingers around, it will help to keep you nice and toasty as the cold season gets into full swing.

5. Do some baking

There's nothing quite like the smell and taste of home-baked goods. Whether you're looking to make your own bread or are happy to stick with that go-to cookie recipe, there will be something you can do when it comes to home baking. It also makes the house smell incredible - a scent that lingers even for a few days afterwards. It means that you can then keep smelling the fruits of your labour well into the week, and it will remind you of your homemade treats to enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee.
