The Edinburgh Christmas Market 2023

We went to Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago, as you might have gathered from the last few blog posts I published, but while we were there, we took the opportunity to take in the Christmas market while we were there. As lovely as it was, I want to be completely honest about the whole thing. It really did look the part and the food was to die for, but it was actually incredibly small, surprisingly.

There was only one crepe stand, which doubled up as a waffle stand, and only a couple of stalls selling mulled wine, which was something on my list of things to get while we were there. It was so busy that I didn't end up getting a crepe or a mulled wine, which was disappointing. There weren't a whole lot of drink options available, other than hot toddies, which are essentially cups of hot whisky. I'm not into that, so I didn't have anything to drink in the end, which was a shame.

The food selection was also limited, although not as much as the drinks. You could get pretty much anything you wanted if you were prepared to queue, because there was only about one or two stalls per product. Although, we did manage to buy a stick of spiralled potato that was flavoured with paprika. It doesn't look like much, but it was actually delicious. We also had a bratwurst each, which were super tasty, but again, it's something you'll only get if you're prepared to wait in line for it.

The stalls and everything aside, there were some up sides to the market. The lights and the overall look of the market was delightful, with as many sparkles and shining lights as you could possibly imagine. There were several quirky bits and pieces to look at, which were actually more entertaining than the market itself, unless you like being packed in like sardines or pushing past streams of people that are all funnelled into the same tight spaces as those coming out again, but I'll stop moaning about how small it was now, haha.

I think to get a true appreciation of how aesthetic the whole Christmas market looked, you need to look through some of the pictures I have posted below. It was an experience, but I suggest that you pay a visit of a weekday afternoon or a Monday night; a time that is severely off peak and out of school holiday time. In short, however, I wouldn't travel all of that was just for the Christmas market, so if you want to visit Edinburgh, don't wait out for the festive period.
