7 Tips for Wearing Makeup On Hot Days

You might not think that the hot weather calls for a change up in makeup products, or even the way in which it's applied, but you'd be mistaken. When the sun comes out, it poses a wealth of different problems for us makeup wearers, so how can you adapt the way in which you do your makeup to accommodate for the warm temperatures? Here are some of my top tips!

1. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise

The way you care for your skin when you're makeup-free dictates the base of your makeup and how the products sit and perform on the skin. The change in weather, whether it be from cold to warm or vice-a-versa, can cause the skin to dry out. Dry skin makes for dry pockets for makeup to cling to and crack in.

If your skin is nice and smooth and hydrated, you won't have this issue. Instead of opting for face creams in the hot weather, go for gels. The ones I use are both from The Body Shop. I like the Vitamin C moisturising gel and the Vitamin E moisturising gel. I recommend them both if you're not a fan of heavy creams in the summer.

2. Wear products with SPF

Whether you find the SPF in your moisturiser, in your foundation or in your concealer, you need to be applying products that contain SPF. This is something that you shouldn't just be doing in the summer, either.

Wearing SPF makeup or beauty products in general should be done all year round to protect your skin from UV light. Just because the sun isn't shining or just because it's cold doesn't mean that these harmful rays can't penetrate your skin cells.

3. Remember, less is more

The last thing you want to do during the hot weather is to cake your face in heavy makeup products. Instead of going all out on foundation, I like to use a bit of concealer here and there to cover up blemishes and discolouration. It's far lighter than foundation and a little goes a long way.

Something else that's great for a 'less is more' makeup look approach is going for a tinted moisturiser over foundation. You can still wear makeup on warm days, but you might be more comfortable if you opted to wear a little less than normal, only make subtle changes here and there for the best effect.

4. Swap out highlighter for bronzer

Highlighter does just that - highlights. When the sun is out, you'll find that the weather will do this for you, naturally. In this case, highlighter can make your face look more pale rather than sun-kissed. This is where bronzer comes into play. I like to wear the Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess product, but I don't just save it for the summertime.

It adds just the right amount of sun-kissed colour but without looking overboard. It doesn't make me look pale and I don't actually need to apply a highlighter on top, as you would with a matt bronzer. Opt for shimmery bronzers and ditch the highlight for a more flattering makeup look this summer.

5. Choose neutral lipstick colours

Like with other makeup products, make sure your lip products have SPF in them as well for added protection. It will stop them from becoming dry, chapped and sore when the sun shines. Also, going for natural colours with a bit of shine will make the overall look seem lighter and softer. Save the darker shades for the autumn and winter, but break out the neutral tones for the spring and summer.

6. Apply some setting spray

If you're really wanting the makeup look to last all day and night, then opt for some setting spray. This is a great way of solidifying the products on the face, stopping them from slipping or shifting in the heat of the summer sun. It's something I only really break out when the weather hits about 25 degrees and I have somewhere nice to be. If not, I actually won't wear any makeup at all, instead opting for SPF moisturiser. Setting spray is optional, but it will help to keep your look steadfast as the day goes on.

7. Use waterproof mascara & eyeliner

I know this stuff is difficult to get off at the end of the day, but it's worth it if you want your eyes to not look panda-like by lunchtime. I like to use the Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara. I enjoy the standard version and the waterproof alternative.

If I have somewhere nice to be where I don't want my mascara to become dry and flaky, then I'll opt for the waterproof version. Also, there's an eyeliner that I absolutely love for hot days and that the Estee Lauder Double Wear eyeliner

It's absolutely incredible. You don't get transfer onto the hood of the eyes or onto the bottom lash line. It doesn't budge but it comes off easily with a good makeup wipe. Choose waterproof makeup products on hot days to avoid looking like a panda by the end of the day.
