How To Eat More Fruit & Vegetables
We all know how hard it is to start a health kick, but once you've done it for a while, its almost second nature. But what if you tried a health kick and didn't enjoy it or found it difficult to stick to? There's actually a simple way to incorporate fruit and veg into your diet without making a conscious effort, and these alternatives can be ultra tasty too!
Soup is not only filling and incredibly tasty, but it also contains (in some cases) more than your five-a-day, especially if that soup is homemade. I always advocate the fresh soups you find in the fridges of supermarkets instead of the tinned version as they tend to be less processed and more healthy. Try a nice tomato and basil blend or carrot and coriander mix. If soup alone doesn't fill your tummy enough, have a nice fresh wholemeal bread roll or a freshly baked granary slice. You could even try Rivitas as an alternative to bread if you like.
I did a recipe on my blog not too long ago showing you how you can healthily roast your vegetables. Its a great way to get your five-a-day or if you have some veg that will go off any day. I'll leave the link here.
Not all salad has to be the typical, boring lettuce, tomato, cucumber mix, add some flame grilled chicken or crispy unsalted bacon, experiment more with vegetables, add some chopped avocado or beetroot, chick peas are also a great addition to any salad. You could even add a small amount of cheese, goats or feta cheese are a popular choice. Not only will it tantalise your taste buds, it should also fill up your tummy and give you over your five-a-day.
Smoothies are a great, fun and tasty way to get fruit and veg into your system, they don't have to be fattening either, just add ice and some semi skimmed milk to your favourite fruits (or veg) and get blending. It makes for a healthy and delicious breakfast or it could even act as a desert. TIP: if you're a fan of homemade milkshakes, add low fat frozen yogurt instead of ice cream.
Vegetables are great as a side dish or even as a little something extra to a bolognaise for example, most veg is okay to boil, you'll get the best taste out of veg that's been boiled in filtered water and left unsalted. You could even boil some asparagus or green beans as a side to chargrilled chicken or sausages and mash. You could even chop up some boiled carrots and put them in a mince meat mix, you could even chuck in some chopped onions, mushrooms and garlic. Peas are also a nice side to fish, whether you break the bank and buy fresh tuna or salmon or prefer the humble fish finger, they're a great addition to any fish based meal.
TASTY PUDDING
Its not always easy to swap a slice of cake for an apple, but a healthy pudding doesn't have to be that boring. Try chopping up different fruit into cubes or slices and pour some greek yoghurt on it. It doesn't have to be flavourless either, if raspberry yoghurt is your favourite, pour some on your bowl of fruit instead, it makes for a healthy, but incredibly yummy pudding (or breakfast if that floats your boat as well) :) My favourite combo is melon and apple with greek vanilla Rachel's yoghurt :)
