How I Keep My Kitchen Counter Clutter-Free & How You Can Do it Too
Keeping a clean, tidy and clutter-free kitchen can prove to be quite the task, but there are some things I like to do that makes this mundane task all the easier and far simpler and you'll be able to do the same, if you want to?
They aren't particularly big things and they won't take much effort at all, but it all depends on how your kitchen is set up and the organisation of your cupboards, for example. So lets delve into the things I do to keep my kitchen counters clutter-free and how you can do it as well.
I carefully arrange my kitchen cupboards
When we first moved into our house, I carefully arranged all of our bits and pieces, scattering them throughout the cupboards based on categories and how much I used things. For example, all of our expensive glassware only comes out on special occasions so all of that is placed on shelves that either lower down (if the cupboard is on the floor) or higher up (if the cupboard is fixed at head height).
I also have all of our breakfast food in one place and ingredients we use for dinner in another place - somewhere that's easy to access. I also have pots and pans and our slow cooker at the front of our cupboards so I can grab those easily. But my Kenwood food mixer is placed at the back of the cupboard as I don't need it regularly.
If you can't get your kitchen appliances into your cupboards, like food mixers, blenders, slow cookers, pressure cookers, air fryers etc, then you might be able to squeeze them in by being smart about the way you store your kitchenware.
Stack pans on top of each other, put things inside each other, buy drawer dividers so as to make the most of the space and to find things easily. The only things we have out on our counter tops are: the kettle, the toaster, the microwave and our coffee machine - the standard things everyone has out on their worktops.
I only have things out that really need to be out
This is an extension to the previous point, so you already know what I have out on my kitchen counters and they're out for the same reasons that yours are, haha. Your kettle, toaster, microwave and coffee machine are all used pretty much everyday on the regular so there's not much point in packing them away to keep getting them out again.
That and we'd lack the space to put all of those things away, although I am tempted to store the microwave away because we don't really use it as much as we used to. It's also quite old, so I'm thinking that, when that one breaks, we probably won't replace it. But then again, it's a very convenient appliance to have - it's a catch 22. If we didn't have one I'd wish we had one and if I did have one, I'd be tempted to get rid of it, haha.
I give everything a place & put everything back in its place when I'm done
Like I've already said, I gave everything a place when we first moved in and everything I packed away lives there till this day. Once we've used something and when it's time to put it away again, it goes straight back in its place so nothing is left out. I know I leave the chopped boards and utensils out, but that's more of an aesthetic thing rather than anything else. Aside from our appliances, they're the only things we have on our counter tops. The windowsill, however, is a different story, haha.
I regularly wipe down the worktops to keep it crumb & food-free
Once we've eaten something, I'll wash the dishes and make an effort to get rid of crumbs and food debris that's left. I'll wipe the worktop down with warm water first and then I'll spray it with some non-abrasive anti-bacterial multi-surface cleaning product and wipe all the worktops down with a clean sponge. I'll then leave them to air-dry and that'll be it until we make the next meal or until the morning. Depending on how I feel, I might light a candle afterwards to make the room smell extra-fresh!
