Watching Russell Howard at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall

If you've ever seen Russell Howard, which will most likely be on the telly, then you'll know that he likes to combine current affairs and issues with comedic references to create one of the funniest bits of stand-up I have ever had the joy to witness. Not only does he highlight what needs changing in, not only our country, but others as well, he also likes to bring in his own family as a way to bring his life down to earth.

He will never not be relatable for me, but he also has such a dry sense of humour that he manages to weave in and out of some of the most up-to-date news, both good and bad. He had a whole host of jokes that he just seamlessly whittled off, almost effortlessly, really, which was impressive in itself, but his ability to improvise and deal with hecklers is second-to-none. There aren't many comedians who I have seen who have been as quick to react to a heckler and actually pull off the ultimate 'burn', so to speak, but Russell does just that.

Touching on topics from Ukraine and USA gun laws to the Coronation and environmental issues, there isn't anything that Russell was scared to reference, which I quite liked. It was gutsy whilst also being funny as opposed to being mean or taking the 'Mick'. The timings of all of his punch lines were also impeccable, something that not every comedian gets right all of the time. You could tell he had been doing it for a long time but that he also really enjoyed what he was doing.

I won't spoil any of the jokes he had, just in case you have tickets to go and see him on his current tour, but some of the jokes that stick out in my mind from the night contains reference to Greg Wallace, a dog that cries whipped cream and a mindfulness necklace. If you've seen him already, you'll know exactly what those jokes are. Whenever I think back to them, it just makes me laugh out loud, literally!

If you ever get a chance to go and see Russell Howard, no matter how small or large of a venue he is playing, then I totally recommend that you give him a watch. This is actually the second time I have seen him live and I haven't been left disappointed. If you're not sure about his vibe, then he often has air time on the telly on channels like Sky One, or you can check out a lot of his material on YouTube.
