4 Tips for Maintaining Healthy Mid-Length Hair
It can be difficult to maintain soft, beautiful and vibrant hair, especially when it reaches a certain length. The longer it gets, the more time-consuming hair care can be. So with that in mind, as a mid-length hair gal myself, I thought I'd give you some of my own tips for maintaining healthy mid-length hair :)
1. Eat more protein
It sounds daft, but eating foods that are high in protein actually has a really positive impact on the health of your hair. Something I have definitely been eating more of is fish and chicken, but there are other food products that you should eat as well that contain protein, including: low fat dairy products, lean beef, eggs and even beans. I have noticed that by upping the amount of protein I eat, the shinier and stronger my hair actually feels.
2. Use the right shampoo
You need to know and understand exactly what it is your hair needs. Is it dry, is it oily, does it flake a lot or is it frizzy? Look at your hair and discover what it needs from you. Using the wrong shampoo can cause more harm than good, so only choose a shampoo that targets your hair type. "Normal Hair" shampoo doesn't cut it for me, because I find that mine can be dull and slightly oily.
So instead, I opt for a shampoo that is aimed at reducing the oil build-up on my scalp whilst also adding some shine. Often, I get the shine from a decent conditioner or hair mask. A lot of it is trial and error, being something that we learn as we get older, so get to know your hair and its needs and you'll be well on your way.
3. Choose an adequate conditioner
I've touched on this already, but conditioning your hair is a really important step in the hair-washing process. I like to comb my conditioner in and leave it there for around 2-3 minutes. Also, I don't just concentrate on the ends. I will work a tiny amount of the conditioner through the scalp.
This helps to rehydrate the follicles, causing them to be less brittle. It also leaves my hair soft, smooth and shiny, whilst also being really manageable to work with when it comes to brushing and styling. If I'm feeling particularly productive, I might use a hair mask, but I only really use it once or twice every two weeks or so.
4. Where possible, allow to air-dry
Heat is one of the worst things you can apply to the hair, especially if you're not using a heat protector. You need to protect your hair when drying it with artificial heat, so use a protector. Otherwise, you should leave it to air-dry wherever you can. This limits the amount of direct heat it's exposed to, as well as ensuring it can dry at a natural rate.
