How to Prepare for Your Wedding Hair & Makeup Trial

Wedding hair and makeup might seem like a small task on your to-do list that's simple and straightforward, but it's actually not quite as easy-going as you might think. When it came to my wedding hair and makeup, I had no idea where to start, which is why I opted to have a hair and makeup trial done.

The lady who did my hair on the day also did the makeup, which I found to be a cheaper way of doing it. So the trial was all done at once rather than me having to go to one place for hair and another for makeup.

But if you're off to your wedding hair and makeup trial, then you'll likely want to know how you can prepare for it. You'll never have done it before, so it's always good to get an idea of what to expect before you go. Here's how to prepare for your wedding hair and makeup trial.

Have an idea of what you want before you go

You should always turn up with an idea of what you want. This way, your trial doesn't drag on and you're only spending time on something that you want to try. As you can see, I went for an up-do, but it wasn't the only one we tried.

I went with a range of different up-do styles in mind, so we gave them a go and I decided on this one after looking through all of the pictures that were taken. This goes for makeup as well as hair.

Have some inspiration because your hair and makeup artist will need some direction and it's always better to show them rather than talk them through it, because wires can get crossed and something could be missed. That's point one when it comes to how to prepare for your wedding hair and makeup trial.

Arrive with a fresh face & just-washed hair

The second step when it comes to how to prepare for your wedding hair and makeup trial is arriving with a fresh face and just-washed hair. Not only is it a breeze for your makeup artist, but it also helps you out.

This is because it gives you a greater appreciation for what everything is going to look like on the day. You're not going to arrive on the morning of your wedding with a full face of makeup on and a messy bun. Arrive to your trial in the same way you'll arrive on the day of your wedding.

Ask about how long it's going to take on the day

You'll get some idea of this after your trial. You'll know how long, at least, it will take for your artist to do your hair and makeup, but what about your bridesmaids? When we got married, my bridesmaids and my mum had their hair and makeup professionally done, which meant that the makeup artist needed around four hours to get us all done up.

You need to know how long the entire process will take so that you're aware of how long you'll need hotel rooms or dressing rooms for. Tell your makeup and hair artist what time the whole thing starts and they can work backwards from there, that's something else to think about when it comes to how to prepare for your wedding hair and makeup trial.

Take plenty of photos from every angle

You can ask your hair and makeup artist to do this for you. It's important that you consider every option when it comes to hair and makeup and your hair and makeup artist will know this as well.

They might well insist on taking some photos, both for their own benefit and for yours. You need something to reference back to when it comes to making a decision about which hair-do works for you and which ones you can discount from the offset.

The same goes for makeup looks. Look at your hair and makeup from lots of different angles, so you can get an idea of what it'll look like in your official pictures. You can also show your mum and your bridesmaids as well if you want to.

Bring a photo of your wedding dress

This might not seem necessary when it comes to how to prepare for your wedding hair and makeup trial, but it's actually more important than you might think. It all comes down to necklines and sleeves.

This is important when it comes to makeup and hair. You also need to tell your makeup and hair artist about whether or not you're having a veil or a comb or a tiara. They will factor this into the look they create for you.

Your makeup and hair artist will thank you for bringing a photo of as much of your attire as you can, so if you have a photo of your dress, or of you in the dress, then bring it with you.
