4 Tips for Navigating the Streets of Venice
Venice is an absolutely beautiful place, and part of exploring the city is getting lost in the history and the architecture of the place. But in practical terms, it is easy to actually get lost in the streets of Venice. I'm on hand, having been there myself, to give you some tried and tested tips for not getting lost in the streets of Venice. So, let's get into it!
1. Ask for the name of the nearby calle (alley) & a nearby landmark
Addresses in Venice are often made up of both a number and the name of the sestiere (district). They don't have street names, which can make getting around and finding restaurants etc quite difficult. When looking up a new address in Venice, you should always research and find out the name of the nearby calle (alley) and a landmark in the vicinity.
2. Use major landmarks to orientate yourself
Usually, St Marks Square (San Marco) is used by tourists as a way to find their way back to the centre of the city. Not far from there you'll find all of the water taxis you need to get around, which is why San Marco is a great place to use as a starting and end point when you're exploring the city.
3. Utilise the water taxis
I know we're talking about the streets of Venice, but the water taxis are a great way of getting unlost in Venice. Their pick up and drop off points are clearly signposted and follow a very easy-to-follow route.
It's a great way of getting from one major part of the city to another, and San Marco is always a good place to start if you want to get a water taxi to other main landmarks in the city. Also, make sure you use the maps that they offer as it can be useful when on foot.
4. If in doubt, use Google Maps
Google Maps is your best friend around the streets of Venice. But it should be used as a supporting tool rather than something to be solely relied on. This is because the signal can be funny and it can lose its mind when it comes to orientation. But it's definitely something to have on hand just in case you do get a bit lost.
