Our Trip Around Canada & New England, USA: A Roundup
We went to America and Canada this year as our main holiday. We did so many things, and saw so much that it was almost impossible not to mention it here on my blog. While I'll go into more detail about some parts of our holiday in another blog post, here's a roundup of everything we did! I hope you enjoy :)
Our trip through USA
New York
This trip we spent a lot more time over in New England. We actually crossed about five different states, including New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. As we hired a car and drove the entire way, it was so much easier to see and do things that you wouldn't have done simply flying internally.
First stop on our trip was New York City. We flew from Heathrow and landed at JFK. Although we waited a long time at immigration (over an hour), it was worth the wait to get on with our new adventure. Eventually, we got through and to our bags, then out the other end.
We decided to get a yellow taxi as opposed to an Uber as it, unbelievably, was cheaper and more reliable. We stayed at the Intercontinental in Times Square, so we were right in the heart of the action. The downside?
We were quite some way from Lower Manhattan and I didn't want to get the Subway as it looked a bit dodgy. This meant that, when we went to see the Freedom Tower, it took us an hour and a half to walk there. We also walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, while we were in the area!
We also visited the 9/11 museum and memorial there to pay our respects. But before that, we visited the Rockefeller Centre, getting tickets to the Top of the Rock to get a stunning, unique view of New York City from different heights.
We then took in Central Park and even managed to get into the Plaza Hotel, where they filmed parts of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. It's not always easy to get in there, as it's only open at certain times to the public. But it seems that we were lucky that day.
To finish the trip off, we took in other sites like Grand Central Station, the Flat Iron, the Empire State Building and the Intrepid Museum on the edge of the city. They have a British Airways Concord there, so we've seen about four of them that still exist in the world.
It's cool as well, because I actually remember Concord when it used to fly, so it's amazing to see so many of them being cared for and looked at in awe by aeroplane fanatics. It's a nice little stop if you're into that sort of thing, but you do have to search for it and do some research, just to check what they have there.
We even managed to squeeze in a Broadway show while we were visiting. We went to see The Little Shop of Horrors. It was absolutely brilliant. The cast, the music and the acting was just incredible. I bought a promotional print and kept our free programmes for good measure.
Finally, as part of the last day of our trip, we visited Macy's where we went purely to see the wooden escalators that they have there. The store itself is over 100 years old, and the only ones they have left are right on the top floors.
Boston
Our trip to Boston was a lot less process-driven. While we still had a plan laid out of things we wanted to do, it was a lot more relaxed than our visit to New York City. We started the first day off following the Freedom Trail, which is a walk around the city that gives you information about the history of Boston.
The only thing we did have planned in was a Baseball game to see the Boston Red Sox vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. We went to one during our honeymoon, seeing the San Francisco Giants at their home stadium, and we really enjoyed it. So this was something we were really looking forward to.
We also wanted to visit the famous food market. It's an old red brick building that's been a food market for over a century, and it houses a wide range of different food products and drinks for people to try. We had a couple of slices of pizza and it was amazing. It's definitely worth a look around if you're planning on going any time soon.
Aside from that, it was really very chilled out. The whole thing was very relaxed, enabling us to just walk around and muse the place at a leisurely pace. So, take a look through our pictures and just take in the sites and aesthetics that Boston has to offer. Who knows, it could be somewhere you'd like to visit next.
Vermont
Vermont might sound a little bit random, but we went here with good reason. I absolutely love dogs, and if we were to ever have one, it would probably be a golden retriever. So for Christmas, Tom bought me a couple of tickets to spend a day with them at the Golden Dog Farm in the heart of Vermont.
You spend half of the day drinking maple syrup and having some play and cuddle times with the dogs. I won't go into loads of detail about it because I want to do a separate blog post about our experience. But I will give you a few pictures to look at so you get an understanding of the number of dogs that attended and the weather and the setting it was held in.
Also, just to make the trip extra special, we stayed somewhere called Spruce Peak Lodge in the heart of Stowe. We had views of the ski slopes, which were off-peak, from our room, our balcony and even our bathroom.
I had a bath with views of the mountains, including Mount Mansfield. It really was a special place, driving through Smuggler's Notch for good measure - an historic landmark for those in the know! We even managed to stop in at the Ben & Jerry's factory, which was pretty cool, too. But after our Vermont trip, it was time to head onto the next leg of our journey - Canada.
Our trip through Canada
Quebec City
Our trip to Quebec City saw a luxurious stay in the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. It sits in the heart of the city, in between new and old town. We had a gorgeous room with a water view, and managed to enjoy every aspect of the stay, including the spa and pool (which was included in the price of the stay), room service and even a turn-down service.
This is when hotel staff come into your room and prep it for a nights sleep. It includes pulling the sheets back for you to get in, putting the blinds down and placing the TV remote and a bottle of water by the bed. They also put a bedside lamp on for good measure.
We also had a good mooch around the place, looking at everything there was to see that's not open to the public. As well as that, we also opted for the valet car service, which is when someone parks the car for you and brings it out when needed. All we had to do was ring the hotel staff on the room phone and ask for the car to be brought around for us.
Finally, our last full day in Quebec City involved us visiting the island they have there. Before hand, we stopped off at a waterfall on the outskirts of the city, which is actually taller than Niagara Falls. We even had a view of it from the island, where we did some wine tasting and had a charcuterie board.
We even stopped off at a small chocolate maker, where we had Mr Whippy ice cream dipped in rich caramel chocolate. It really was an experience. If I ever went back, it would be to explore more of the food and wine they make there, because it was all delicious.
Toronto
We then left Quebec City to spend a day in Toronto. This put us closer to Niagara Falls, which was the last stop on our trip. The whole purpose of our trip was to go up the CN Tower. We ended up having a meal up there, which was amazing. I won't go into loads of detail, again, because I want to do a separate blog post about it. But I'll leave a few pictures of our Toronto trip, including a walk around the distillery district.
Niagara Falls
We went to Niagara Falls as the last stop on our trip. We started off by checking into our hotel, which came with a spectacular view of the falls, both the American and the Canadian side. We then went on a boat ride into the falls, which was an exhilarating experience and I definitely recommend it. To get back to the hotel, we used the funicular, which was really cool!
Finally, we went over to somewhere called Niagara On the Lakes, taking in views of Lake Ontario and Lake Niagara along the way. We made sure to visit as much of the town as possible on our way to the airport, including a spot of wine tasting for good measure. But it was then time to go home :( Thus concluding our American/Canadian road trip for 2026!
