6 Reasons to Visit Quebec City, Canada
When it comes to Canada, Quebec City is often overlooked in favour of places like Vancouver or Toronto, but I can't understand why. Quebec City is an incredible place, and there are a number of reasons why you should choose to visit this gorgeous place over other cities and towns in the country. So, here's why I believe that Quebec City should be on your list of places to visit when you go to Canada.
1. You get to enjoy the history
Quebec City has an old town and a new town. The old town is down towards the bottom, by the water. It can be accessed via stairs or using the vertical railway. It consists of numerous small streets and lanes that are tucked out of the way, but there are also historic squares where gorgeous churches and halls sit.
It's simply a stunning and full of history. We even stumbled across a pretty little convent during our exploration of the town. I mean, if you want history, then Quebec City offers it up in buckets! What more could you want as a history buff?!
2. Experience European influence in North America
When visiting Quebec City, it would be oh so easy to forget that you were actually in North America and not in the heart of a small French village. It oozes European charm and beauty in a way that no other place does. It's a truly unique experience that can only really be had in this part of the world, so if you want to see it for yourself, then you need to put Quebec City on your list of places to visit.
3. See amazing views of the famous Chateau Frontenac
We actually stayed at the Chateau Frontenac when we visited Quebec City (read more about our stay), so it really was a "pinch me" moment when we arrived and pulled up in vallet parking. But anyway, it's a truly world-famous hotel and it's absolutely stunning, both inside and out.
It's totally worth a walk up there just to explore the grounds and the have a look around the reception of the hotel. Some of it is closed off and only open to hotel guests, but there is a gorgeous bar up there that you can visit.
Have a drink in a hotel where Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth II's parents stayed when they visited the city. There's truly nowhere else like it in the world, and it can only be experience in the heart of Quebec City.
4. You're a stone's throw from Montmorency Falls
Niagara Falls might be where it's at in Canada, but Montmorency Falls is actually taller and, in my opinion, louder! It also offers a unique experience, in a way that Niagara Falls doesn't. There's a bridge that goes over the top of the waterfall, so you can walk right over all of the gushing water at a truly leg-wobbling height.
It's definitely something to be in awe of and is totally worth a visit if you have a car during your stay, like we did. If you don't have a car, then you may be able to get there through organised tours or even book a taxi to the destination.
5. You get a chance to taste the city's world-famous dishes
Quebec City has a one-of-a-kind menu that can't be had anywhere else in the world. The Quebec Shepherd's Pie is an example of that. It's like an upside down version of the traditional dish that we know and love, only it's packed with veggies (even the mash contains sweetcorn), made with pulled beef and a delicious tomato chutney.
I didn't think it would be my thing, but it really was amazing, and I'm gutted that I won't be able to try it again. I know I could make it at home, but you just know that it really will NOT be the same! I've made peace with the fact it will forever remain a memory from my amazing trip to Quebec City. But of course, you need to try the Poutine!
6. There's a small island that can be visited to complete the trip
There's a small island that you can visit which isn't too far from the waterfall I spoke about. It's definitely easier to get there if you've rented a car, but it's worth the effort to have an explore. There are wineries, chocolate shops, coffee shops and cider mills on the island that are totally worth a visit.
Also, they're all independent businesses, so you can only experience it in Quebec City. Also, you get fantastic views of the actually city from the island, where the Chateau Frontenac stands proud. If you're visiting Quebec City, then make an effort to head over there - you won't regret it.
