6 Tips for Your First Wedding Dress Fitting

How exciting is that you get to choose a wedding dress for your big day? It will come around sooner than you think, which is why you're probably reading this blog post. Whether you've booked your first appointment or are looking to make your appointment soon, here are some of my tried-and-tested tips for your first wedding dress fitting!

1. Keep in mind that wedding dress delivery takes time

You might think that six months is plenty of time in which to shop for a dress and then to have it ordered in, but you'd be wrong. I bought mine 7 months before and that was still too late. It's recommended that, considering the latest delivery times, that you shop for your dress around 10 months in advance.

I know it sounds like a long time before the wedding, but the last thing you want is to feel stress and pressure because your wedding dress hasn't arrived yet. Mine was made-to-order, and it still needed modifications to be made afterwards, which took another month and two more dress fittings.

It's always worth ringing the bridal boutique you're thinking of buying the dress from and asking their advice on it if you have more than a year to go. However, something they may say is that it depends on the designer who is making the dress.

Some are already made and just need to have the right size ordered in. Others will need to be made from scratch, like mine was. What I would do is get the worst case scenario on waiting times and then anything sooner than that is a bonus.

2. Bring the shoes that you want to wear

Where this step isn't always necessary on a first fitting, it's always worth doing so that your seamstress has an idea of how much needs to be taken off the bottom. No matter how tall you are, the chances are that you're going to need that dress taking up off the hem.

Bringing your shoes to your first fitting is a good way to go. Not only does it help the seamstress, but it also helps you because they might be able to give you some idea of how much those alterations will cost before getting started. It all helps in terms of budgeting costs.

3. Wear similar undergarments to the ones you'll wear on the day

You want to make sure that you're wearing similar under garments to the ones you'll be wearing on the day. I don't recommend wearing tummy-control undies because that's not your true shape or size. If you want to wear tummy-control on the day, then you can do, because it will only help to make you feel more comfortable in a dress that already fits you perfectly. Most wedding dresses are worn without a bra, but it depends on the cut and the style you've gone for. Personally, I went wearing similar underwear and it worked out to be a good move.

4. Only bring a couple of people to help you choose your dress

Most bridal boutiques are pretty small, so they can't accommodate large amounts of people or groups of friends. Also, too many cooks spoil the broth. You don't want too many people to get involved because you'll never reach a decision. As well as that, you want to keep it as a surprise for as many people as possible and inviting the world and his wife to come and help you try on dresses and choose one for the big day isn't really keeping your secret confined to a small number of close family and/or friends. I went with my mum and my two bridesmaids and that was it. It's always best to keep it small.

5. Have an open mind

It's good to go in with some sort of idea in mind when it comes to choosing a wedding dress, but don't let it all hinge on the style you have in your head. Try on a mixture of cuts and styles because you might actually find yourself choosing something that you never would have dreamt of suiting you in the first place. It's all about how you feel in it as well as how you look, so don't be close-minded and try on as many different styles as possible.

6. Think about how you'll be moving in it on the day

Are you planning on having a sit down meal for a few hours or a grab-and-go lunch? Are you wanting to have a good old dance in it or would you rather spend the night slow-dancing with your new spouse? It's all something to consider when choosing a dress.

Are you wanting to spend all day in it? If so, think about what the night will entail and make a choice based on that, rather than how it will look in the pictures when you're standing up.
