How I Look After Chrome Exterior Door Handles
Exterior door handles become mucky over time anyway, but chrome handles are somewhat more difficult to keep clean. Thanks to their naturally shiny nature and the risk of them becoming scratched, chrome handles require a little more care and TLC than uPVC door handles, for instance. So how do I look after our chrome door handles? Let me give you some insight :)
They're cleaned regularly
Any door handles become grubby and dirty quickly. So I regularly clean all of the door handles in our house. But when you're talking out exterior chrome door handles, the dirt is somewhat different, becoming layered in dirt, dust and rain, among other unpleasant things, like bird droppings etc. My chrome exterior door handles are cleaned once a week just to keep them looking and feeling their best.
I buff them up using a clean microfiber cloth
Once the chrome exterior door handles have been thoroughly cleaned, I will dry them off and buff them up using a soft, dry microfiber cloth. This helps to bring back the shine and restore the gleam once again. This is always a satisfying step when it comes to exterior chrome door handles because they often become dimmed by dirt and dust, in a completely different way to how your interior door handles become dirty.
Abrasive cleaners & tools are never used
I will never use abrasive cleaners or tools on our chrome door handles. I don't want to scratch them or wear the coating off. To clean them, I use a simple mix of warm water and washing up liquid on a damp cotton cloth. After this, I will buff them off with a microfiber to dry them and restore their shine.
I make sure they're completely dry
Once I have cleaned my exterior chrome door handles, I will make sure that they're completely dry. This helps to prevent water spots and rust. While you can't always prevent exposure to moisture, such as when it rains or frosts over, I won't expose our chrome door handles unnecessarily to water. I will never leave them to air dry once they've been cleaned. I will always dry them off myself with a soft cotton cloth.
