How I'm Changing My Skincare Routine in My 30's
Skin in your 30's changes. It's no longer as elastic, resilient or fast-mending it once was. That's why some of my skincare habits throughout my 20's have to be ditched in favour of other, more kind and friendly alternatives. So what how am I changing my skincare routine in my 30's? Let me take you through it all!
Ditching the makeup wipes
Wipes are abrasive to the skin, and while your twenty-year-old skin might have been able to take it, your 30-year-old skin isn't as resilient. Some makeup wipes can contain alcohol too, in order to remove the makeup more quickly. This can cause more harm than good to your skin, which is why I'm choosing a cleanser over makeup wipes in my 30's.
Being more gentle
As I've already said, your skin isn't as resilient as it once was. Scrubbing, pulling and scratching isn't something that 30-year-old skin can withstand anymore. I'm choosing to be more gentle with my skin, especially when it comes to exfoliating, which is something I'll get onto in a moment.
Upping my dedication to SPF products
Exposure to the sun isn't good for the skin generally. When the sun is shining, I'll apply sun cream, but it never actually occurred to me that UV light is present almost all the time. The only time my face is covered in any form of SPF is when I wear makeup, which isn't 24/7. So I need to make more of an effort to choose skincare products that contain SPF in them, and that I can use all year round now that I'm in my 30's.
Using an eye cream
As you get older, your skin loses its elasticity. I've noticed that, with age, the skin under my eyes has become a tad more scaly and my circles are becoming more and more dark. Whether it's all in my head or it's actually something that's starting to change, I'll be choosing to use an eye cream from now on, just to make sure.
Cleansing both in the morning & at night
Throughout my 20's, I only ever used to cleanse my skin at night. As I'm getting older, I'm making more of a conscious effort to cleanse my skin in the morning as well. You might be wondering why. Well, a pillow isn't actually as clean as you might think.
You sweat on it throughout the night for one thing, which isn't exactly good for the skin. So when you wake up in the morning, you're washing all of those contaminants away, and that's why I've started to cleanse in the morning as well as before going to bed at night.
Applying toner more often
Toner is something that most people skin over during their skincare routine. But it's something that you shouldn't skip in your 30's. Toner helps to tighten the pores, eliminate toxins and rebalance the skin. It also provides the perfect foundation for your serum, which is what we're touching upon next.
Ensuring I use a serum regularly
Moisturiser is hydrating an protects the skin, to an extent, but in your 30's, there needs to be an additional step before you even think about putting your moisturiser on. However, you want to make sure that those important active ingredients get right through to the deep dermal layers of the skin, and that's where a serum comes in.
Switching from physical exfoliation to chemical alternatives
Throughout my twenties, I physically exfoliated my skin, either using a beaded exfoliator or by using a soft exfoliating glove. I'm ditching these techniques now I'm in my 3's, instead switching to chemical exfoliators rather than physically scrubbing the skin to smooth it off.
