3 Tips for Choosing Your Coffee Beans
When it comes to deciding which coffee beans to choose, there are several factors that you need to take into account to get the job done. This is especially the case if, like me, your favourite roaster has discontinued a range you loved and now you have no choice but to find something new.
I have decided on a new coffee bean, but only after a lot of trial and error. So here's what I've learnt in the process that you can take forward when choosing new coffee beans that are the perfect replacement for your much-loved, discontinued coffee beans.
1. Is the flavour profile right for you?
Flavour is everything when it comes to coffee. You might think that all coffee tastes, pretty much, the same, but you'd be mistaken. There are loads of different flavours of coffee bean on the market, from citrus and chocolate to nuts and floral, you need to think about what you do want and what you don't want in a coffee bean.
If you like a heavy, rich coffee, then choose one with a nutty, chocolatey flavour. If you like a light and refreshing cup, choose a floral or citrus coffee. Also, it can make a difference if you drink your coffee with milk. A black cup of coffee might be more flavoursome, for instance. Think about your own personal preferences and go from there - you know what you like at the end of the day.
2. Look at the roast level carefully
The roast level plays a vital role when it comes to choosing the right coffee beans for you. Each level will provide a different intensity level and it can also dictate the flavour. I like a very high roast level, because I like strong coffee. If you prefer a lighter flavour, then a mid-range roast level would be best. I would choose a roast level based on strength alone, if it was me.
3. Think about your brewing method
How are you planning to brew your coffee beans? Are you going to put them in a grinder and them put them through a cafetiere? Do you have a bean-to-cup machine where the beans are ground down right there and then for a fresh cup of coffee?
Something else to consider is the grind level. How coarse or fine do you like your coffee beans to ground? Each brewing method and grind will give different characteristics to the coffee. Do your research and find out which bean would work best for your favourite brewing method.
