5 Reasons to Buy Your Wedding Cake (Rather Than Make it Yourself)

Weddings are expensive. I know this from experience. As such, it's so tempting to cut corners and try to take matters into your own hands. Trust me, I'd thought about doing our own flowers at one point, let alone baking a cake. But let me tell you that those thoughts are nothing but intrusive. If you're dead set on baking your own wedding cake, then here are some reasons as to why that's actually a bad idea...

1. Professionals are experienced

I like baking. Is it something I do day in, day out? No. Is it something I would want to do that often? No. I have no experience when it comes to baking, not compared to the professionals. While I like to bake a banana bread, some cookies and a sandwich cake every now and again (I can bake a delicious birthday cake, for instance), there's no way I could produce a cake that could feed that any people, look immaculate and taste incredible all at the same time. Leave it to the pros to do it for you, if for no other reason than this.

2. Cakes of that size can be heavy, so you risk more accidental drops

A wedding cake is an incredibly important part of any wedding, no matter what anyone tells you. If you end up baking it yourself, you'll be tasked with transporting it to its destination. You don't want to put that pressure on yourself or on anyone else.

A professional cake baker will know all the tricks of the trade to make sure that cake gets there intact, no matter how many tiers it has. Let the professionals deal with pressure of getting the cake there in one piece, because they've likely done it many, many times before.

3. Wedding cakes can be huge

While you might well, like me, have baked a birthday cake here and there, it does not compare to the size of a wedding cake. It will take you hours, if not days, to make, construct and decorate a stunning wedding cake. Not only that, but it can be costly, because you might want to have some trial runs beforehand (I know I would). Given the size and scale of most wedding cakes, I'd let a professional do it for you.

4. You want the finish to be immaculate & beautiful

I'm a very neat and creative person but there's no way I would be able to expertly decorate a wedding cake. Everyone would know it's homemade. It would look very rustic for all the wrong reasons. A professional cake baker will be extremely talented when it comes to the decorating and the overall finish.

Your photographer will want a pitcure of your cake, and it's a memory you'll have for the rest of your life, so don't let it be something that looks messy and slapstick, no matter how well you think you can decorate it.

5. It relieves an already stressful situation

Planning a wedding, and the day itself, is stressful enough. The last thing you want to do is add more stress and pressure to an already stressful situation. Let the cake bake do their thing, because it's what they do best, and let them take responsibility for the transporting, constructing and decorating of the cake (they'll put flowers in the top for an extra fee, for instance) while you relax and enjoy the planning and the day itself.
