How to Make a Small Living Room Feel Bigger

My boyfriend and I have a pretty small living room. Where it's only just the right size for two people, we still like to make the room feel a bit bigger than it actually is as we do spend quite a large amount of our time chilling in there.

If you're renting, you might find this quite a useful blog post as you can't build an extension or start knocking walls out - as tempting as it might be. So with that in mind, here's how you can make a small lounge feel bigger than it actually is. Enjoy!

Don't add too much furniture or paint walls too dark

This is a general rule when it comes to small spaces, hence why a lot of rooms that are more modest-sized, are painted white or furnished with light-coloured products and materials. When renting, you often don't have a choice when it comes to colour, so add your own bits and pieces to the place to make it feel brighter. Try fitting your own lamp shapes or hanging your own curtains to make things feel more light and fresh.

Let as much natural light in as possible

Whether you take the curtains down or brighten the room up a bit with different pieces of furniture or accent products, it's still important that you do your best to let as much light into the room as possible. Even having a change around, like moving the sofa away from the window, could make a huge difference when it comes to letting light in and making the room feel bigger simultaneously.

Make sure the furniture you choose is the right size for the room

Before you go out and buy a brand new sofa or a chunky TV stand or a long coffee table, make sure you measure everything up properly first. The furniture should be proportionately sized to the room you have, otherwise it could feel very full and very cluttered very quickly. Bulky products can also make your space feel tight and claustrophobic so be wise when it comes to selecting furniture and that doesn't just include size.

We chose a glass coffee table and a glass TV stand for our tiny living room to give the illusion of space. We even opted for a small three-seater sofa as opposed to a larger one just so we had somewhere comfy to relax but it also allows us to host more than two people at once. We also purchased a large, circular mirror to go above the sofa in order to make the space feel larger - mirrors are great at doing that, so perhaps look to do the same :)
