How to Stay as Hydrated as Possible This Summer
Keeping well-hydrated during the summer months can be difficult, especially if you forget to drink throughout the day - something I'm guilty of - so what can you do to keep well-watered during the summer that doesn't involve buying a 2-litre water bottle with measurement lines on it? Here's what I do when the weather gets hot :)
Eat foods that are water-based
Water-based foods are lot easier to consume during the summer when the weather is warm, mainly because they're light and delicious. Some of the water-based foods I love to eat during the summer includes cucumber, strawberries, water melon, ice berg lettuce, cantaloupe, peaches, oranges and even skimmed milk (the red top one if you live in the UK).
Avoid drinking alcohol
Alcohol is never a good thing to drink if you have a thirst on. What you need to do is avoid it and swap it out for water, squash or even fresh fruit juices (not from concentrate) and smoothies. Not only will they provide you with all the nutrition you need, but it will also help yo keep you as hydrated as possible, especially if you blend up fresh fruit and veg to create a tasty juice or a delicious smoothie.
Consume as much water as possible
It sounds very obvious, but this can be very easily forgotten when you're busy doing other things and enjoying your summer holiday. As well as trying to consumer water-based foods, you mustn't forget the basics - water. Try and get about 3 or 4 pints in a day, if not more.
Refrain from consuming caffeine
This is a difficult one, especially for me as I love a few cups of coffee throughout the day, but you must try to avoid drinking caffeine or at least cut down your intake. When you'd normally have your caffeine fix, swap it for a glass of water or a cup of squash or eat a slither of water melon or some cucumber sticks. Either way, refraining from consuming caffeine is important if you're feeling dehydrated.
Replenish your body when you start to sweat
When you feel yourself starting to sweat, then make sure you drink plenty of water and eat water-based foods. Your body is using its much-needed moisture through your pores, much like you would when you exercise. You wouldn't go for a run, come back and not have a well-earned drink of water. Have this frame of mind when you begin to sweat on particularly hots days.
