6 Ways to Stress Less

There are moments in life that can really try your patience. Things are sent try us and, so depending on what it is, the stress can build up, often quicker than you initially anticipated. While it's easy to become stressed out, it's definitely not easy to destress. But there are some things that I like to do when I feel the stress pour over me. So here are six ways to stress less.

1. Be active

I know what you're thinking. Exercise is always the answer to everything. I know that you don't always feel like exercising, and that's OK. But being active doesn't mean going to the gym or going for a 5km run.

It can also mean doing some gentle exercise, like walking the dog or even doing a spot of gardening. I find that, a lot of the time, my stress is somewhat relieved by spending some time in the fresh air. So if you want to stress less, then look to good old Mother Nature.

2. Be around people

Sometimes, destressing calls for a distraction, and a nice distraction is being around friends and family. As well as helping to take your mind off things, it can also help to shed some light on your situation. It's often a good environment to get some insight and advice from the most important people in your life.

3. Have some "me" time

While spending time with people can help to destress, it's often just as useful to have some time to yourself. Some quiet time to spend looking after yourself and being with your own thoughts is often a good healing technique when it comes to destressing.

Have 40 Winks, have a bath, go for a walk, do some reading - as long as you're doing something alone that you love, you should experience some form of stress relief sooner rather than later.

4. Try to avoid unhealthy habits

Unhealthy habits can refer to anything from smoking and drinking alcohol to a reliance on caffeine and even unprescribed, over-the-counter, self-prescribed medication. You're sure to find that all of those things are doing more harm than good.

While they might provide some short-term relief, it's not actually solving any of the issues you have regarding stress. If you do find yourself relying on those things, seek medical advice to get to the root cause of the stress and then address that to destress in the long-term.

5. Try to be positive

I say "try" because I know how difficult it can be to have a positive spin on things when everything seems impossible. It's completely unrealistic and unhelpful to say "be positive" because it's just not that easy sometimes.

Instead, try to find something positive in every situation that you come across. Looking for a silver lining in negative situations can help me to destress, personally, so it's worth a try if stress takes hold of your life, too.

6. Accept things that you have no control over

Sometimes, there are things that happen that you cannot control. Instead of stressing out about it, it's just easier to accept the situation for what it is and come to terms with the fact that there's absolutely nothing you can do to make it any better. The sooner you accept things you have no control over, the better when it comes to destressing and avoiding it in the first place.
