FAQs About Starting a Blog

As you can probably see from my blogging archives, I've been blogging for over a decade already. So in recognition of that, and given my experience, I thought I'd answer some of the most frequently asked questions about starting a blog. Let;s get started, shall we?

Which platform should I use to start my blog?

To be honest, it really doesn't matter. I've stuck with Blogger because it was a popular platform at the time, and WordPress required a monthly payment, and I wasn't actually working at the time (having still being in the middle of doing my A-Levels), so I had no choice but to stick with a free blogging platform.

But there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. In fact, it's come on so much in the last 14 years, and so have all of the other blogging platforms. As such, it really doesn't matter which one you choose. At this stage, it's down to personal preference.

How much time does blogging need?

I'm not going to lie, blogging does take up a lot of your time if you're going to take it seriously enough. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes that you guys don't see. I plan content months in advance, and each of that blog posts need pictures that I take myself.

I then edit them myself, write all of the content, add the images and publish the content, too. After that, it takes time to advertise the new content, so it really does take up a lot of time, and that's just for one blog post. I'd say it has to be something you really enjoy doing if you're going to keep it going for a considerable amount of time.

How often should I blog initially?

I'd say, if you were just starting out, to aim for one blog a week, at the most. If you find yourself only having the time for one or two a month, then make sure that you're uploading content regularly and consistently in order to keep your following up. Also, don't put pressure on yourself to upload more than once a week, like I do. This can be unrealistic if you're just starting out and finding your feet.

How much does it cost to run a blog?

Really? You can start and run a blog for free. These days, all you need is the camera on your phone, some free editing software and a Blogger account. When I started out, camera phones weren't great, so I needed a good camera to get the images right. But nowadays, that's just not necessary. There's no need to spend loads of money starting a blog, because I didn't, apart from buying my Canon camera.

How do you choose a niche?

To be honest, I didn't really choose one when I first started out. I just blogged about the things I enjoyed and took an interest in. I saw it more as an online diary, documenting days out, birthdays and other milestones. To be honest, you could pick a niche, but start as you mean to go on if that is your plan. A niche you could pick includes the following: beauty, food, home, lifestyle, fitness, relationships, environment and more.

How do you choose a blog name?

I actually had a blog name before 'Lorna's Leaning', but you could literally choose anything you want. I kept mine generic so that I could blog about everything and anything, but if you choose a specific niche then your name could reflect what you want your blog content to be about. It's a lot harder than you might think, to choose a name, so spend some time on it before you come to actually create your blog.
