How to Purge Your Makeup Collection

It can be difficult to know when it's time to start purging items from your makeup collection, especially if it's extensive or expensive. But there needs to come a time when you have a clear out. The way I justify it is that it makes room for some new things, haha.

There's also something nice about having some quality basics on hand. But how can you strip back your makeup collection so that you have a few must-haves? Here's how you can purge your makeup collection effectively.

Set yourself a time limit

It can be easy to spend hours looking through your collection and pondering whether or not to get rid of it. But to save time, and so that you're more ruthless, set yourself a time limit for purging those items. Allocate yourself 20 minutes or so to clear out the items you never use or that have expired. Setting yourself a time limit is the best way to get the job done as efficiently as possible.

Use the four year rule

Four years is a long time, and styles, personal preference and trends may have changed in that time. While makeup often has a use-by date of 12 months, it's a waste to chuck expensive makeup products away, unless they're creamy or a liquid, like a foundation or concealer, for example. If it's four years old or more, then ask yourself if you'd use it again or if you even still like that shade or blusher, for example.

Ask yourself how long it's been since you used something

If you've pulled out a few items in your collection that you've not used for a while or that you forgot you had, then you should definitely consider purging it from your makeup collection. This is much the same if you're having a wardrobe clear out and you come across something that haven't worn in a while or that no longer fits. Take the same approach and mindset with this to make sure your makeup purge is successful.

Figure out what your essentials are

I've touched on this briefly at the start of this blog post, but think carefully about the essentials you need before purging items from your makeup collection. There are a few staples that I like to have, and that includes a couple of eye shadow palettes on different colour spectrums, concealer, foundation, eyeliner, mascara, bronzer, blusher and eyebrow powder.

I find you can get loads of different looks from just those basic products. They're also all high quality, going for more high-end brands as opposed to high-street names. Although that part is down to your budget and your personal preference. I find having a few quality makeup products pays for itself in the long run.

Make room for a couple of fun items

I've just harped on the fact that the essentials are important, but I'd be a hypocrite if I said that I haven't got items in my collection that I bought just because they looked cool or it was limited edition. Don't be super stuffy when it comes to purging your makeup collection. If you want something fun in your collection, then go for it!

Get your makeup storage right

This might sound like a weird tip to give for purging your makeup collection, but if you have the right storage, you can keep track of what you have and what you use. This regulates the extent of your collection, so you aren't hoarding and you're using what you already have before buying new things and adding to your collection unnecessarily.
