5 Reasons Why I Will NEVER Use Wallpaper in My Home

Wallpaper. It's been the bane of our lives since we bought the place, so it's no wonder I want to see the back of it for good. But what do I have against it? Well, let me tell you exactly why we will NOT be using wallpaper in our home...EVER!

1. There's too much choice

I'm a naturally indecisive person. I cannot make decisions to save the life of me. So choosing wallpaper colours and patterns would not be a quick or easy decision for me to make. Choosing a paint colour is far more straightforward and it's also easier to change if it's not quite right.

With wallpaper, it can be an expensive and time-consuming mistake to make if you've picked on that doesn't suit your taste. Sometimes, you can't go wrong with one or two colours and a tin of paint to get the job done.

2. It's difficult to remove

When we bought our house, the entire living room and downstairs toilet was wallpapered up to the nines. In fact, both rooms had about five or six layers on the stuff to remove. It involved the removal of many years of pasted on wallpaper, so if I ever see another strip of it it'll be way too soon.

But it was extremely time consuming and difficult to take off the walls. It also leaves a really sticky, thick and waxy residue behind that will need to be scrubbed off. If we ever put wallpaper up and then decided not to have it anymore, then the worst bit would be taking it off the walls again.

I can't bear the thought of it, in all honesty. If you've ever faced the same challenge when it comes to removing wallpaper, then you'll totally understand my reluctance. I just don't have the patience, essentially. This is another reason why we will not be using wallpaper in our house, ANYWHERE!

3. It's time-consuming to put up

Wallpaper isn't a bad choice if all you have to do is cosmetic work in a new build, for instance. But when, like us, you've taken on an whole renovation project, wallpapering the room is the last thing you want to do when you just want the job to be done. Painting the walls is far easier and quicker.

4. It can be expensive

Wallpaper can be so expensive. Not only can decent rolls with nice patterns cost the Earth, but when you have a room as big as our living room, for example, the sheer number of rolls needed means you'll have to remortgage. A couple of tins of paint costs around £50-£60, whereas several rolls of wallpaper can set you back hundreds of pounds.

5. It can damage your walls

The header photo is the result of the state of the walls after wallpaper removal, and that's just one wall in one room. It really is incredibly damaging to plaster, especially in older properties where plaster might have deteriorated due to age, if nothing else.

When we removed the wallpaper from our living room, it also pulled off a layer of plaster in several areas, and in big sheets. We needed to re-plaster the room as a result, which we actually did ourselves.

I wouldn't risk putting wallpaper up as a lot of work went into the wall restoration both in the living room and the downstairs WC. Again, if you've ever had to remove wallpaper and suffered the same damage that we did, then you'll get it!
