The Garden Jobs I Want to Get Done Before Summer Starts

I love gardening. I like to really get stuck in with plants and flowers, keeping them tidy etc, but gardening jobs are something else. The maintenance of fencing, decking, furniture and more is a huge job, and, given the winter season we've just suffered, those jobs will probably require an entire weekend to get done. But I'd like to do them before we start hosting for the summer. Here are the garden jobs I want to get done before the summer starts.

Paint the fences

The fences really have suffered over the winter, what with all of the rain and frost we experienced. That and we get a lot of birds sitting on the fence and pooing down it, which strips the paint off as well. So the fences have really been battered over the last six months.

That and I think the colour has faded somewhat so it needs a refresh anyway. But I really would like to paint the fences before we start doing any sort of hosting over the summer period. Here's my guide for maintaining wooden fences.

Paint the decking

We have a little square bit of decking that we redid and extended a few years ago, and that's painted the same colour as the fence. But like the fence, it too suffered as a result of the bad winter weather. Usually, it only needs doing every two years.

But this needs doing again, despite only painting it a year ago. Again, bird poo and snow strips the paint off, as I use a paint rather than a stain. In hindsight, a stain for the decking would have been a bit more hard-wearing. But you live and you learn!

Wash the furniture

This sounds like a strange one. We have a table and chairs down on the patio, but a lovely corner sofa up on the decking. While the table and chairs would need nothing but a simple brush down and a tabletop clean before using it again, the sofa is a different story.

The corner sofa is made from plastic, so it can be left out over the winter. The only thing you put away are the cushions. So we pack the cushions up and put them in the garage over the winter. We house them in a big zip-up bag as they won't fit in a box!

But the plastic frame left behind has been battered by wind and bird poo. So it's a bit dirty, with debris left behind. It's also quite dusty. So a good clean is needed before I even THINK about putting the lovely cushions back on there to use.

Turn over the stone

We have white stone in all of the boarders. Of course, what with the wet weather and the leave falling and rotting there, it's become a little grubby. The best thing you can do here after the winter season is to give the stone a wash down (using a hose should do it) and then turn them over. This brings up the white stone nicely, ready for another summer season to begin.

Tidy up the trees & hedges

As the spring has started, along with some rain and sunshine, the hedges and trees have started to sprout new growth, rather quickly, too. So something I'd like to do before hosting for the summer is to just give those trees and hedges a bit of a tidy up. I'll never do more than that during this time of year as the birds like to nest in them. A little trim here and there does no harm, and it makes the garden look far tidier.
