5 Things I Do Instead of Scrolling

Scrolling. We all do it. We've all done it and we're all guilty of spending wayyyyy too much time on our screens. Now, I've written content about digital detoxes before, mainly because I actually enjoy taking a break from technology.

But it got me thinking about what I actually get done when I'm not scrolling. I thought I'd tell you what I do instead of using a mobile device, in the hope that it gives you some ideas for things to do instead of scrolling on your phone for hours on end!

1. Read

As an English buff, with a degree in English Language and Creative Writing, reading material, whether it be a book, a newspaper or a magazine, is something that I absolutely love. Reading will hold a special place in my heart, which is why I'll always find the time to read some form of content when I'm not scrolling on my phone.

Not only is it a great way to unwind and take my eyes away from a bright screen, but it also helps to widen language knowledge and expand my vocabulary. Reading is the one thing that can help those who have trouble writing prose, so I see it as a form of training, really,as I write for a living. The bonus? It's something that I will always find joy in, so it's a win-win all in all.

2. Bake

Baking is something that I find fun. It's also a learning curve. It gives me a chance to make new things and learn new ways of doing things. It's a constant lesson in the kitchen, which is why I'll never get bored of it. Not only is it something more productive than doom scrolling, but it also provides my husband with some delicious sweet treats, which he doesn't have any objection to.

3. Garden

I love my plants. So I would almost always prefer to do something in the garden than sitting and scrolling on my phone. This is especially the case in the spring when more needs to be done in the garden than at any other time of year. It's also good for the soul to be outside in nature, in the fresh air with your hands in the soil - who would rather be doom scrolling when you can spend time in the garden?!

4. Clean

I'm one of those people who likes their home to look as if no one lives in it. But to achieve that aesthetic is hard work, so if I get some down time, I'd rather do some cleaning to put the house right again than to waste that time being unproductive by doom scrolling. At least I can see something for that time spent when the house is clean and tidy again.

5. Exercise

Sometimes, when I do't feel like doing anything, it's so easy for me to just give in and spend hours scrolling social media. But I think about all of the things I could be doing and at the top of the list of things I'd feel most guilty about not doing is exercising. So I won't reach for my phone. Instead, I'll get some form of exercise done.
