6 Reasons to Take a Personal Day

Taking a personal day might sound like another commercial buzzword, but what if I told you that there's more to it than you might actually think? Taking a personal day allows you the opportunity to do a wealth of different things, all of which will benefit you in some way, personally. So, why should you choose to take a personal day and what could you use it for? Let's take a closer look.

1. Recharge your mental health battery

A personal day is used for a number of reasons, but one of the main benefits of taking one is to recharge your mental health battery. It helps to reduce stress, prevent burnout and relieve feelings of anxiety. Whether you do something simple like a read a book or go for a walk, or go the whole hog and enjoy a full day out doing everything that makes you happy, taking a personal day i the perfect opportunity to spend some time on your mental health game. Just do what makes you feel relaxed, content and mentally lighter.

2. You can deal with personal matters

As the name suggests, you can take your personal day to deal with personal matters. This could be anything from having a full spa day to just doing something simple like picking your kids up from school when that doesn't normally happen. It's a great way to spend some time nurturing your life outside of work, rather than having to constantly juggle your personal life alongside your working one.

3. Productivity is boosted

This sounds so counterproductive, I know, but there's a good reason as to why taking a personal day can make you more productive. A rested and recharged mind actually makes for a more productive one when you come to work again, so taking a personal day actually benefits the business in more ways than you might have otherwise thought.

4. Burnout is prevented

By taking a personal day here and there, you're able to recharge your batteries, both mentally and physically. Just like with anything, if you take a break from it for a while, you can come back to it feeling refreshed and ready to take on a new challenge. Taking a personal day allows you to do just that, therefore preventing burnout in the process.

5. Enables the enhancement of physical health

We've talked about the enhancement of mental health, but what about physical health? I think that a personal day can still be enjoyed, but without spending all day in the gym. You can go for walks or a nice bike ride in a national park now that the weather has picked up and the days have become longer.

Physical health is just as important as mental health, but it can be difficult to maintain that when you work full time. I find that, personally, I feel much better mentally if I've done some form of exercise in the day, whether it be a steady walk around a lake or a HIIT workout in front of the telly for an hour.

Use your personal day as an opportunity to clear your body and your mind so you feel refreshed for the work ahead, upon your return. Remember, exercise doesn't have to be back-breaking! Enjoy your movement for added endorphins.

6. Cultivation of work-life balance

When you work full time, like I do, it's important to establish some sort of work-life balance. Sure, you can take some annual leave to run some errands or to decorate the house, but a personal day is somewhat different.

A personal day can be spent doing all sorts of things, but if you're going to take one, you need to make it as meaningful and as worthwhile as possible. I'd spend a personal day with family, perhaps going for a walk and a spot of lunch now that the weather is better.
