4 Ways to Beat Jet Lag

Think about it...you've paid thousands of pounds to travel half way across the world, so when you finally arrive at your destination, all you want to do is enjoy your holiday. But sometimes, jet lag can rear its ugly head, potentially ruining your well deserved break. Perhaps you suffer with it more when you return to your home country, having lived in a different time zone for a considerable amount of time. But believe it or not, there are a few simple yet effective ways to try and beat the effects of jet lag on your body, allowing you to enjoy your holiday, or to prevent it on the way home.

Get a good night's sleep before you fly

This one is simple yet highly important. Believe it or not, this will considerably improve how you feel when you arrive at your country of choice. This would in fact be better than having a nap during your long haul flight. It will make you better equipped to deal with jet lag on the flip side, so don't make that ever so common mistake when you go off on your jollies.

Avoid the airport bar

This may be incredibly difficult to do, especially if you're going away on a girls or lads holiday. But trust me on this, you want to steer clear from alcohol at all costs, both before you fly out and before you're due to fly home. The effects of alcohol mixed with the altitude you'll be flying at is a recipe for disaster. It can increase tiredness and make you incredibly dehydrated. Avoid that tempting G&T to prevent feelings of crappiness.

Say no to sleeping pills

Like with sleeping during the flight, sleeping pills are one of the worst things you can do during a long haul flight. Although it might seem like a good idea, it really isn't and you'll thank me later. You do not need sleeping pills, you'll wake up feeling more groggy and tired than you did before you took them. Instead, relax with a cup of herbal tea (hot water is free on most flights, and you can always bring your own teabags), and just enjoy the ride.

Resist drinking coffee and other caffeinated drinks

It might seem like a good idea to grab a cup of coffee when you feel jet lagged, but you're actually doing more harm than good. Likewise before you even fly out to your destination. Caffeine can inhibit your ability to sleep naturally, your body clock has to adjust, completely unaided, to the new time zone you're in, as well as the time zone you'll be coming back to. So put down your latte and that can of Red Bull, because trust me, it won't help a jot.
