The Story of Guitar Heroes at the Nottingham Playhouse

On Thursday 30th March, Tom, myself and my parents went to the Nottingham Playhouse to see The Story of Guitar Heroes. Essentially, it's four fellas who have a passion for guitar playing and who recreate the songs of who they believe to be a 'Guitar Hero'. Spanning right back to the 1950's up to the 1980's, they have an extensive repertoire of music that they jam out to. From Chuck Berry and Jimmy Hendrix to Eric Clapton and Brian May, they performed all of the greatest hits that were originally written and/or played by some of the greatest guitar players in history.

It was a really fun-filled night with an interval in the middle, so the show is actually quite long. Everyone was enjoying themselves and the atmosphere was electric. You could see people tapping feet, banging heads, clapping hands and swaying bodies to the rhythm of the music. To say it was, essentially, a series of cover songs, they're a very talented bunch and it didn't sound too far off from the original music. They even gave a bit of Guns N' Roses a go, although I don't think anyone could live up to the legend that is Slash.

Towards the end of the show, they touched on a bit of Queen, which I thought was very apt, although they didn't even attempt to sing the notes that Freddie Mercury could belt out. The final song of the night was Bohemian Rhapsody, with the main guy doing his very best Brian May impersonation. He had a very similar guitar to that of the big man himself and the playing was not a note out. If you closed your eyes, you'd think you were listening to the soundtrack of the original song.

Overall, it was a brilliant night and I would definitely go again if they ever came around in the future. If you'd consider yourself a bit of a guitar geek, or even if you simply enjoy good music that was created by the greats of the industry, then I'd absolutely recommend you give these guys a little Google search. They're on all the social media channels and I think they have a website, so check them out if you're a music buff!
