3 Reasons to Go & Give Blood Today
According to NHS Blood Donation, hospitals in England need three life-saving blood donations every minute. Right now, they need O negative and B negative blood donors, but anyone with any blood type is very much welcomed and appreciated for their time and their donation.
Blood levels fall dramatically at different times of the year, more when people are busy with seasonal things, like Christmas, or if the weather is particularly good or particularly bad. But they need blood at all times of the year, no matter what.
In fact, according to NHS Blood and Transplant, the NHS need 135,000 new donors every year to keep up with the demand. Anyone can go and give blood, provided you're fit and healthy and are between the ages of 17 and 65.
If you're looking for some extra information about who can and can't donate (because there are some instances where you could be turned away), then click on this link. It's also important to note that the duration of time in between each donation varies depending on if you're a man or a woman.
Men can donate once every 12 weeks, whereas women can donate once every 16 weeks. Now that you know the ins and outs of blood donation, and if you've ever been on the fence about donating blood yourself, then I'm giving you three solid reasons why you should go out and give blood today.
1. It can save up to 3 lives
Giving blood doesn't just have the potential to save the life of one person, but it also helps to save the lives of up to three people, in some cases, according to the British Heart Foundation. If it wasn't enough to save the life of just one person, how does three sound? Not to mention, you could be in and out in the space of just one hour. What better incentive is there to go and give blood today?
2. You get to find out your blood group
If you've ever been curious about what your blood group is, and you don't, thankfully, have any other way of finding out, then giving blood can help you to solve the mystery. I didn't know what blood group I was until I started giving blood, so if you've always been wondering, then go and give blood today. Even if you do it just once for that purpose, it's still helped in some way.
3. You're well-looked after (& it includes chocolate biscuits)
After you have completed your donation, whether you've donated platelets or blood, you'll be well-looked after by the staff who work there. Not only do they make you a refreshing drink, but they also let you choose from an array of snacks, from crisps and biscuits right through to granola bars and fruit.
They will never kick you out right after donating, mainly for your own safety. But the staff are always very friendly and helpful. I have always felt very well taken care of after donating, so don't let that put you off either, because the aftercare is second-to-none.
