Blogmas (Day 23) | How to Survive the Boxing Day Sales

Everyone loves to take advantage of the Boxing Day sales, myself included. But despite that, it can be very stressful, especially when you venture into town, fighting each other for the last pair of shiny Kurt Geiger heels. So I thought I'd publish a post which gave you my hints and tips for getting the most out of your Boxing Day trip to the sales, hopefully, you find this useful!

Dress Comfortably

This is quite an important one, believe it or not. It's important to feel comfortable while you're braving the retail storm. For me, if I'm not comfy, I can get pretty grouchy pretty quickly, especially when plonked in a stressful situation. Boxing Day sale shopping is not a time for wearing heels or brand new footwear, your feet could get very sore very quickly, so mitigate this problem entirely and just go for comfy EVERYTHING! Also wear layers. The shops can be pretty warm, you don't want to be sweating, so wear layers, the hotter you get, the more you can take off, simple!

Don't Take The Car

It can be very easy to just take the car into town, but don't underestimate how busy it's actually going to be. Unless you have a parking spot that no one knows about, don't bother because you won't find a space. The trick is to take a bus, do a park and ride, or, if you live close enough, walk. Don't go down the taxi route as they can be disgustingly expensive.

Go Alone, Or Take ONE Friend

It can be very easy to make it a girls shopping trip, but it's already very busy, you don't want to add to that. The more people come with you, the more complicated it gets as everyone wants to go somewhere different. Keep it simple and go alone. You can go where you want to, be in and out ASAP and get out of there. If you have to, bring one other person. When I go, I take my mum and that's it. It's less stressful for everyone involved.

Make Sure You Have A Plan

This sounds pretty OTT for a simple trip into town, but believe me, you need a plan. It's so busy that you don't want to be wandering through town, not knowing where to go next, probably spending money that you needn't have spent on things you didn't want in the first place. Mitigate this issue and plan where you want to go and what it is you want to buy. Go into that shop, buy what you wanted and get going to the next shop on your list. You'll find the trip goes a lot quicker, leaving you time to maybe have a cheeky lunch or even dinner while you're out to reward yourself!

Bring Water

This is more important than you probably think it is. But make sure you bring water. It can get warm, shops have their heating on, you have a coat on, there are loads of people about, it can get very hot, so make sure you're staying hydrated. You don't want to feel faint, dizzy or light headed while you're trying to get the job done. Take it easy and don't rush around either.

Start Shopping Before The Stores Open

Yes, you can do this. We live in a world that's very media and internet orientated. You can start the sale shopping from the comfort of your own home before the shops even open at 8am Boxing Day morning. Take full advantage of that!

The Sales Don't End On The 26th

It is in fact, quite the opposite. The January sale period has only just begun and will continue to be on for weeks. It's not the be all and end all, shopping the sales on Boxing Day. If you miss it for whatever reason, it's not the end of the world. You can still shop online, or just wait for the crowds to die down and venture out then.

Respect Each Other

The stereotype is that people are elbowing others out the way, pulling each other's hair, punching people in the face for the last plasma television. This isn't quite the case, but being rude and ignorant is simply unacceptable. There is no excuse for this behaviour at all! Respect each other. Is it really worth being rude for a pair of shoes or a designer handbag? No. Take a step back and stay calm, it isn't the end of the world, nothing you can buy will change your life or anyone else's, so be kind to one another and enjoy yourselves.
