6 Board Games We Love Playing at Christmas
Tis' the season to be whipping out all of our board games that don't get to see the light of day at any other time of year. Christmas is the perfect time of year to get everyone together for some much-needed fun and some healthy competition, but which board games do I love to play at Christmas with all of my loved ones? Well, let me show you!
1. Monopoly
An absolute classic that could last the entire weekend, Monopoly is an absolute must at Christmas time. We like to play it in between Christmas and New Year, when everything slows down and we have the patience to let the game run into a few days.
Although usually just Tom and I who will see this game through to the bitter end, there are some tricks you can use that will make sure the game wraps up in a reasonable time, meaning the whole family can have a roll of the dice on Christmas Day.
There are so many versions of Monopoly that you can get these days. While we have the original game, we also love our Queen (rock band) version - who wouldn't? Although I am in the market for a Disney version, so if you see one, let me know!
2. Obama Lama
Despite this game not being played on a board, it's still an amazing rhyming game that the whole family will love, especially around the festive season. While you have to also have a good short term memory, it's a really fast game to play if you're looking to get it done and dusted within an hour or so. Perfect for the whole family, you won't get board of this card game.
3. Cluedo
Cluedo is another classic that you just can't leave out at Christmas. While it might take longer to complete than Obama Lama, it can be polished off in no time at all when compared to Monopoly. It's a great game to play to get the (egg)noggin' (see what I did there? Haha) working when you've been off work for a few days, and it never fails to impress.
4. Blockbuster
If you're looking for something a little different that harnesses all of the nostalgia and entertainment that you could want in a board game to play at Christmas, then this is the board game for you.
There are many different categories to play and it will leave the whole family in fits of laughter. Also, the best bit is that the game itself is housed in a VHS-style box, so you can think back fondly on your childhood while having the time of your life with your nearest and dearest.
5. Uno
Although this isn't strictly a game that's played on a board, much like Obama Lama, it's still a classic game to play at Christmas, with many families reaching for it over drinks and nibbles. It doesn't require a lot of brain power and the premise is extremely simply and easy to follow. It's something to play with the children, as well as facing-off against adult players - the more the merrier when it comes to Uno, if you want the game to last a little longer as well.
6. Scrabble
Who could forget this wordy favourite? I love Scrabble. It's something that never fails to entertain me, and I almost always find a way to win. Much like Cluedo, it requires a bit of brain power, and it also helps me to get back into things at work, being a copywriter who works with words all day, five days a week! You'd think I'd be sick of Scrabble, but it's one game I really look forward to playing around the festive season in particular.
