A Guide for Buying Christmas Lights

Christmas is in full swing, and more people than ever before are taking the opportunity to decorate either the exterior and/or the interior of their houses with some fantastic Christmas lights. But there's more than meets the eye when it comes to buying Christmas lights, whether they be for indoor or outdoor use. Here are some of my tips for buying Christmas lights this season, as a festive decor veteran!

Know which type of lights you want

Something you should decide on, before you go shopping for your Christmas lights and before placing your orders online, is to know exactly what it is you want. What will suit the exterior layout of your house?

How would the lights look indoors? Where are you planning on putting them in and around your home? Have a plan in place before you make your purchase, so you know that you're getting the right ones for you.

Think about the colour scheme you'd like

Christmas lights come in many different colours these days. I know when I was a child, it was all the rage to have lots of multi-coloured lights with a flower plastic trim. Fast-forward to modern times and there are many different colours and designs to choose from. What colour would you like? Multi-coloured? Bright white? Warm white? All-blue? The choice is yours.

How are you going to power your Christmas lights?

Something that stopped us in our tracks last year was exactly how we were going to power the Christmas lights we wanted for our home. Think about how you're going to power external lights, in particular. You might be able to get some solar-powered Christmas lights these days.

Just know that battery-powered lights are suitable for indoor use only. Make sure you read the packaging carefully before making your purchase, especially if you're not sure how you're going to power the lights in the first place.

Is the cable colour right for you?

Cable colour might not seem too imperative, but it really is. Christmas lights for Christmas trees are normally green-coloured. Other cables can be clear and you'll likely find that exterior lighting cables are white.

White cables are perfect if you're looking to hang exterior lights from your eaves, for instance, whereas clear cables are incredibly versatile and can be used almost anywhere in and around your home, provided you check the packaging as they might not be suitable for outdoor use.

While you might not think that the cable colour is important, it dictates the look of your Christmas lights, more so than you might have thought otherwise, whether they're for indoor or outdoor use.

Are there enough bulbs & is the cable length long enough for what you need?

Something that we have fallen victim to in the past is buying Christmas lights with not enough bulbs or cable length. Make sure that you're buying Christmas lights that are the right length for the project you need them for.

If you don't it causes hassle to you, because you'll need to take them back and have them refunded. Alternatively, it could cause you to pay even more money for a second set, when you could have saved money by buying Christmas lights of the right length to begin with.

Plan your Christmas light layout to make sure you're purchasing lights with the right number of bulbs for you and your home. Don't be tempted, like we did, to stand in places like Homebase and buy Christmas lights on a whim, haha!
